Saint-Gobain Weber EWI Render Brick colour created to match aesthetics for Rotherham regeneration project
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) embarked on a property upgrade program in the Dinnington area, focusing on enhancing the thermal performance and aesthetic appeal of 88 homes built in the 1930s. The challenge was to integrate modern thermal insulation while preserving the traditional Georgian red brick appearance of the properties. Saint-Gobain Weber's External Wall Insulation (EWI) system, specifically the weber.thermXM, was selected for this project. A key aspect of the project involved the development of a new red brick colour, named Georgian Red, for the weber.rend RB Render Brick finish. This new colour was meticulously created by Saint-Gobain Weber's laboratory in Flitwick, Bedfordshire, to accurately match the existing red brick Georgian properties in the area, addressing RMBC's requirement for aesthetic consistency. The properties, identified as 'hard to treat' due to varying wall constructions (some solid, some with narrow cavities), needed significant thermal improvement. The goal was to reduce the u-value from 1.48 W/m²K to a target of 0.28 W/m²K. This was achieved by applying 80mm of expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation to the outer walls as part of the weber.therm XM system. The application process for the weber.rend RB Render Brick finish involved several steps. First, an initial coat of weber.rend LAC render was applied over the insulation, incorporating a mesh-cloth reinforcement. A second layer of weber.rend LAC, with a lightly comb-scratched surface, was then applied to promote bonding with the weber.rend RBB base coat. This base coat, applied at 7-8mm thickness and ruled flat, served as the mortar line for the brick effect. Subsequently, a 2-3mm coat of weber.rend RBF face coat was applied and lightly textured with a soft bristle brush to create the brick face. Once this layer had set, the brick pattern was carefully marked, and cuts were made through the face coat to expose the base coat, achieving an authentic, bonded brickwork appearance. To further enhance the traditional look, a distressed finish was created using an artistic application of weber.sil P, a silicone-enhanced masonry paint, resulting in an aged brick effect. This meticulous approach to replicating traditional aesthetics while integrating advanced thermal insulation was well-received by both RMBC and the residents. The Hall Construction Group, based in Kingston upon Hull, served as the main contractor, with Skyline Construction Services Ltd. of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, acting as the Weber-recommended applicator for the EWI installation. Mark Thompson, Contracts Manager for The Hall Construction Group, highlighted the success of the EWI in creating warmer, more efficient, and attractive properties that blended seamlessly with the surrounding architecture. Residents reported significant improvements in warmth and reduced heating costs. John Mullins, Contracts Manager for Skyline Construction Services Ltd., collaborated closely with Weber to develop the Georgian Red color and praised the precise roller work required for the distressed brick finish. He emphasized the EWI system's effectiveness in bringing the U-values up to modern building standards, leading to greater warmth and energy efficiency for residents. The project successfully combined aesthetic preservation with significant energy performance upgrades, improving the living conditions for residents in the Dinnington properties.
