A key focus of the redesign was to enhance natural light, as the original house was notably dark. Hills addressed this by incorporating new windows on the sides of the front bedrooms and installing skylights throughout many rooms to maximize light penetration. The rotting blackbutt flooring in the wide hallway was replaced with new blackbutt, and a new bathroom was added behind the guest bedroom. This bathroom features a marble vanity, a luxurious tub, smaller wall tiles, and a herringbone floor pattern, with an innovative wet room design that places the bath beyond the shower to optimize space. The asbestos lean-to was demolished, making way for a new section of the house that includes a third guest bedroom (or study) and a powder room. This new area functions as a transitional space leading to a thoroughly modern living extension at the rear. The design accounted for the property's slope, utilizing it to create a slightly elevated new living section. This elevation allowed for the inclusion of clerestory windows around the top of the kitchen and dining areas, effectively filtering more light into the main living space. The modern kitchen is equipped with Miele appliances, a butler’s pantry, a concealed fridge, three ovens (standard, steam, and microwave combi), and a warming drawer. Speckled terrazzo countertops, chosen from Concrete Collaborative, incorporate various colors present in the kitchen, tying together warm wooden parquet flooring, plaster walls, and the oat, white, and blue cabinet scheme. This selection aims to make the kitchen appear to 'grow out of the floor,' ensuring a radiant and blended look without feeling sterile, and augmenting the natural light. Exposed ductwork was utilized to eliminate soffits and preserve plaster crown moldings, adding to the room's dynamic shapes and forms. Playfulness and color were crucial to the design, with different colored cabinet frames and unique cabinet pulls adding mindfulness and a sense of mystery to everyday activities. Previous owners had also effectively utilized the attic space, converting it into an additional bedroom and a family room. However, the bungalow presented challenges, particularly its dark and inefficient floor plan in the 1990s addition. This section included a bedroom and laundry overlooking the garden, a space Jennie felt was better suited for a living area. A significant issue was the lack of kitchen bench space, compelling Jennie to prepare meals on the stovetop. To address these functional shortcomings and improve the home's flow, the family engaged architect Adam Hampton of Hampton Architecture in 2019. Their primary goals were to design a new extension with a living area that maximized garden views, reconfigure the misplaced bedroom, and incorporate an ensuite for their eldest child, who needed a private bathroom. Today, the renovated home features an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area that occupies almost the entire left side of the house. A distinct sitting room is situated between this open-plan space and the entry, while the main bedroom suite and family bathroom are located to the right of the entry. The children’s bedrooms now overlook the backyard, and the pitched roof of the upper level houses a study and a family room. The kitchen, designed as the central hub, connects seamlessly to the new living room and the backyard. A notable architectural feature of the extension is its pitched roofline, which mirrors the original front facade and achieves an impressive height of approximately 4 meters, enhanced by skylights, to create an expansive and airy feel. Innovative design choices include a 1.4x1.1-meter cool room in place of a traditional fridge, providing an efficient way to store groceries. Jennie also specifically requested that all storage be below bench height, accommodating her stature. In the dining area, French doors were added, opening onto a deck overlooking the front garden and pool, with a sheltered sitting area beneath. Windows in the children’s bedrooms were enlarged, and the attic family room gained a balcony to further integrate indoor and outdoor spaces. The main bedroom was reconfigured to enlarge both the ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. The interior design, largely overseen by Jennie, showcases a bold navy blue palette, particularly prominent in the sitting room through artworks and soft furnishings. This is contrasted with vibrant pops of red and orange, seen in a Knoll ‘Womb’ chair and a patchwork kilim in the dining area. While she initially hoped to complete much of the work before moving in, the prolonged timeline necessitated living through the construction. Major challenges included replacing nearly everything in the house, from plumbing and electrics to insulation, as well as installing new flooring, a new bathroom, and a kitchen. Henson adopted a hands-on approach, undertaking many DIY projects herself, such as pouring the floors and stripping wallpaper, after initial difficulties with a builder. A significant personal project was refinishing the exterior and painting all the windows, which she documented on Instagram, noting how it transformed her perception of her home. Key design decisions included opening up the living room and kitchen by removing walls and an old fireplace, creating a double-height ceiling, and adding a mezzanine for a library/reading nook. This open-plan layout suited her lifestyle as a single resident and provided an ideal space for entertaining. The sink was purchased for £100 from a salvage yard, and the bath was acquired for free from Facebook Marketplace after the seller grew impatient waiting for collection. Henson expressed her fondness for a ceramic ceiling light imported from Italy and a red Chinese cabinet that has traveled with her for over two decades. Her custom-made kitchen island, constructed from four antique chests of drawers fitted onto a wheeled birch ply base, serves as a central storage solution, eliminating the need for wall cabinets. For paint choices, Henson left the freshly plastered walls and vaulted ceiling in the main living area and kitchen unpainted, sealing them with Polyvine Decorators Varnish for protection.
