HGTV's Mike Holmes Says Hardwood Flooring Should Never Be Installed In One Area

Hardwood flooring is a popular and desirable home feature, with over half of potential home buyers willing to pay more for homes that include it. Realtors also agree that installing hardwood floors often results in a return on investment exceeding 100%. While aesthetically pleasing in living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways, renovation expert Mike Holmes advises against installing hardwood flooring near the front door. His primary concern is the material's susceptibility to moisture, which can cause significant damage. Wood is a porous material that readily absorbs water. Even sealed or waxed hardwood planks can show stains over time from small spills or consistent exposure to moisture from muddy boots. This continuous exposure, or alternating wet and dry conditions, can lead to the wood planks swelling and contracting, ultimately causing the floor to warp and buckle. Holmes advocates for water-resistant materials in entryways, citing his personal choice of tile for his own front door and the use of wheelchair-friendly vinyl mimicking wood in his show "Holmes Family Rescue" for areas adjacent to exterior doors. Beyond aesthetic damage, installing wood flooring in high-moisture areas like entryways carries serious health risks, particularly mold growth. According to Holmes, mold can germinate within 24 hours if there is air, moisture, and organic matter present, such as wood, paper, grout, or drywall. While visible mold can appear within weeks, it can also grow undetected beneath floorboards, potentially causing symptoms like headaches or emitting a musty, mossy, or mildew-like odor. The risk of mold is not confined to front doors; any high-moisture room, including bathrooms, should also avoid hardwood flooring. Holmes suggests considering tile or other suitable flooring options for bathrooms if a wood-like appearance is desired. Holmes also emphasizes the importance of thorough preparation, such as leveling uneven floors, before any flooring installation. He advises DIY enthusiasts that investing effort in correct installation will save both time and money in the long run. While new flooring trends may emerge, the classic appeal of wood remains constant. To ensure the longevity and value of a hardwood flooring investment, it is crucial to install it exclusively in dry areas of the home, thereby preventing moisture-related damage and potential health hazards for decades to come. #HardwoodFlooring #HomeImprovement #MikeHolmes #FlooringInstallation #MoistureDamage #MoldPrevention #HomeRenovation #EntrywayDesign #HardwoodFlooring #HomeImprovement #MikeHolmes #FlooringInstallation #MoistureDamage #MoldPrevention #HomeRenovation #EntrywayDesign
