Edelman: Plumbing Supply with a touch of history, panache
Edelman, a third-generation plumbing supply house based in Bedford Heights, Ohio, continues to thrive by adapting to customer needs and maintaining a strong family legacy. The company's history began with Alan Edelman, who, at 93 years old, still works daily. Born in Poland, Alan survived the 1939 Russian invasion, where he lost most of his family, and endured being a teenage prisoner in Russia. After the war, he immigrated to the United States, initially working in the New York garment industry before moving to Cleveland with his wife. With his father-in-law's help, Alan started selling plumbing supplies from a step van, rapidly growing the business to open his first warehouse in Cleveland.
In 1976, Alan's son, Sheldon Edelman, joined the company. Sheldon introduced the concept of destination showrooms, offering luxury plumbing fixtures for kitchens and bathrooms, eliminating the need for Cleveland residents to travel to cities like New York or Chicago for high-end products. Today, Sheldon, as president, guides the company with his three children: David, Dan, and Rachel. Dan Edelman, Vice President, manages the supply house operations and contractor education, including coordinating continuing education classes for plumbers. David Edelman acts as an internal consultant, focusing on technology trends, marketing, and social media to enhance customer service. Rachel Edelman, the branch manager of the Westlake, Ohio, location, is responsible for merchandising both showrooms and overseeing social media content, marketing, and events.
Currently, Edelman employs 34 people and operates a second showroom in Westlake. The company offers products from over 150 brands, ranging from handmade architectural hardware to advanced high-tech kitchen appliances. In the past two decades, Edelman has diversified its offerings to include appliances, architectural hardware, windows, and doors, consistently seeking out innovative designs, superior quality, and excellent customer service from global suppliers. Rachel Edelman emphasizes the company's commitment to customer satisfaction, stating that confidence in product installation and reliable support are paramount. She highlights the importance of providing comprehensive solutions and acting as a single point of contact for various project components.
The showrooms are designed to showcase an extensive array of products, ensuring clients realize the vast possibilities for their projects beyond generic options. While the sheer volume of products might initially seem overwhelming, the organized layout helps clients navigate and find suitable designs. Edelman continuously updates its showrooms, focusing on enhancements rather than complete overhauls, to display the latest and best products available. The company dedicates significant effort to streamline the selection process, helping clients filter through numerous options to find what best fits their needs. Rachel Edelman notes that the homebuilding process can be complex and time-consuming, and Edelman aims to provide valuable expertise rather than just processing orders, building client trust and loyalty.
Edelman's approach involves a thorough evaluation of style, value, quality, and manufacturer distribution policies. The company invests heavily in cultivating strong brands, necessitating a partnership and support-oriented relationship with vendors. The ultimate goal is for clients to perceive Edelman as the go-to destination for high-quality, unique, and innovative products. The company believes that delivering successful outcomes for clients leads to repeat business, making satisfied customers the core of their marketing strategy and success.
