Design focus: Why statement bathroom taps are taking centre stage
The latest trend in bathroom design sees a shift from purely functional accessories to decorative statement pieces, particularly with taps. Consumers are increasingly seeking personalized and luxurious finishes, moving away from traditional chrome towards more adventurous materials and colours. The 'industrial-luxe' trend is gaining significant traction, emphasizing decorative features and bold outlines in brassware.
Ben Bryden, Sales & Marketing Director at RAK Ceramics UK, highlights that consumers desire a luxury finish and a personalized look in their bathrooms, mirroring the aesthetics of the rest of their homes. There's growing confidence in experimenting with bathroom design, with spaces no longer confined to clinical white and polished ceramic. Brushed brass and nickel, along with copper taps, are becoming popular choices for creating a luxurious ambiance, contrasting effectively with natural stone and wood to achieve a timeless aesthetic.
Nigel Palmer, from House of Rohl, corroborates this trend, noting a move from chrome to warmer-toned taps, including rich, dark bronze finishes. He observes a departure from rigid, minimalist bathroom planning towards a more relaxed, personal, eclectic, and expressive design approach. Palmer suggests embracing statement pieces, especially those with designs or backstories that resonate with the client.
Ashley Sinclair, Specification & Design Manager at BagnoDesign, Sanipex Group, points out that gold is being utilized in a sophisticated manner to add class and elegance, particularly when paired with marble-effect porcelain and dark surfaces. She emphasizes the importance of using a consistent brassware finish throughout the bathroom, extending to elements like flush plates, to create a cohesive overall look.
Ronke Ugbaja, Product Management Leader at Lixil Emena and Grohe UK, states that bathroom taps, once considered purely functional, are now recognized as decorative elements. Grohe is experiencing increased demand for bold metallic finishes, coloured brassware, and ceramics in distinctive shapes. This allows designers to position bathroom taps as central statement pieces, with brands continually expanding their range of designs, features, and colour options. Ugbaja also advises retailers to highlight the availability of matching bathroom accessory ranges, including flush plates, handles, and shower fittings, which simplify planning and ensure a seamless aesthetic.
The market is seeing a rise in mixed metallic and Matt Black finished single-lever spout taps, as well as three-hole wall or deck-mounted basin mixers. Jorge Hernandez, Product & Design Manager at Bathroom Brands Group (Crosswater), notes that consumers are moving beyond mainstream minimalism, opting for colour, texture, and playful shapes. Fluted finishes, in particular, are becoming prevalent in bathroom design, extending to brassware.
Uniquely designed taps with strong silhouettes are crucial for adding the desired attention to detail and styling to bathroom designs. Jeevan Seth, CEO at JTP, explains that bathrooms are now viewed as more than just functional spaces, with consumers actively seeking coloured finishes like Brushed Brass and Matt Black. These finishes have grown in popularity as homeowners aim for on-trend schemes. By selecting taps, radiators, and accessories in matching finishes, a cohesive look can be easily achieved throughout the space.
Beyond black and gold, brands like Axor Hansgrohe offer custom colour matching options for their One Collection taps, allowing them to either blend seamlessly or provide a striking contrast within any bathroom scheme. The 'industrial luxe' trend in brassware is expected to continue its growth trajectory as manufacturers persistently innovate and expand their collections of statement brassware. This trend underscores a broader shift towards bathrooms as highly personalized and aesthetically integrated spaces within the home. The evolution of tap design reflects a desire for individuality and sophisticated detailing in modern interiors, with brands responding by offering diverse materials, finishes, and forms to meet evolving consumer preferences. Retailers are encouraged to showcase these ranges to help customers achieve their desired luxury and personalized bathroom environments. The integration of technology and sustainability, such as Grohe's EcoJoy technology for water conservation, also plays a role in modern tap design, combining aesthetic appeal with practical benefits.
