Berber Rugs Used to Be in Every Stylish Home — This is the Design-Forward Style That I Think Has Replaced Them in 2025

The Berber rug, once a ubiquitous fixture in contemporary homes, particularly among millennials, is experiencing a decline in popularity. While its eventual return to trend is anticipated, current interior design preferences in 2025 are shifting towards alternative rug styles. The primary change lies in the weave type, moving away from plush, high-pile, and tufted designs to favor flatwoven rugs known for their durability and ease of cleaning. Historically, Berber rugs originate from Morocco and are characterized by their continuous loops of yarn, creating a dense, pebbled texture. Early versions featured a flecked appearance, which evolved into the more recognizable modern geometric patterns, often in black and white. Interior designers Lauren Saab and Rebecca Hughes acknowledge the warmth and comfort Berber rugs provide, especially in informal family areas or ski properties. However, the widespread use of the cream-and-black loop pile has led to a sense of exhaustion with the style, indicating an evolution in how rugs are integrated into home decor. In 2025, the preference is for flatwoven rugs, particularly those made from natural materials such as jute, organic wool, and cotton. This shift emphasizes organic textures that offer warmth and comfort without sacrificing durability. Designers are increasingly opting for tonal flat weaves that provide a crisp pattern without bulk or low-pile wool rugs with subtle stripes that offer softness. This marks a clear distinction between flatwoven and tufted rugs. Among the emerging styles, Kilim (or Kelim) rugs are gaining significant traction. These flatwoven textiles are distinguished by their bold, geometric patterns and vibrant colors. They are seen as a more colorful and refined alternative to Berber rugs, offering cleaner lines, a flatter weave, and a more robust construction. Similarly, Dhurrie rugs, while visually alike to Kilims, are typically associated with Indian craftsmanship. Both Kilim and Dhurrie rugs are not hand-knotted or tufted, contributing to their smooth surface and zero pile. These flatwoven rugs, especially Kilims and Dhurries, are favored for spaces where pattern is desired without added visual weight. They are often placed under sharp-lined coffee tables or on polished concrete floors to soften hard materials. The color palettes tend towards sun-faded hues like chalk, clay, and limestone, creating an earthy and curated aesthetic. Checkered and plaid-like patterns, often integrating different materials like wool and jute, are particularly popular. These patterns are intricately woven into the rug, resulting in subtle variations in color and texture. The appeal of these flatwoven rugs lies in their ability to act as statement pieces, anchoring a room's design rather than being an afterthought. Their vibrant and colorful nature can inspire complementary color schemes and unify pattern motifs throughout a space. While Berber rugs retain a timeless quality for their dense wool loops and practicality in areas like stair treads due to their durability, their modern geometric iterations are considered less fashionable. Practical drawbacks of Berber rugs include their difficulty to clean due to the thick wool pile and handwoven nature, leading to shedding. The thick pile can also interfere with door clearance. Furthermore, in high-traffic areas, the texture of Berber rugs can flatten quickly, diminishing their aesthetic appeal and functionality. The tight loops are also problematic for pet owners, as a single pulled strand can quickly unravel the rug. Therefore, the trend in 2025 points towards flatwoven rugs for their lighter feel, brighter appearance, and enhanced practicality, offering both warmth and a visually cohesive anchor for interior spaces. #InteriorDesign #RugTrends #HomeDecor #FlatwovenRugs #KilimRugs #DhurrieRugs #BerberRugs #DesignTrends2025 #NaturalMaterials #InteriorDesign #RugTrends #HomeDecor #FlatwovenRugs #KilimRugs #DhurrieRugs #BerberRugs #DesignTrends2025 #NaturalMaterials
