SELECTING LIGHTS FOR WORKS OF ART (Published 1985)
The selection of appropriate lighting for artwork within a home is a highly individualized process, similar to choosing the art itself. The decision to employ individual picture lights or a track lighting system often hinges on practical considerations, such as the constraints imposed by apartment landlords regarding extensive ceiling installations. Martha Baer, senior vice president for contemporary art at Christie's, notes a preference for individual frame lights on older artworks, whereas modern pieces, which typically feature less elaborate frames, are often best illuminated by natural light without special directed lighting.
Individual frame lights are commonly attached to the top of the frame and are designed to either match or complement its color. The electrical cord associated with these lights can be discreetly managed using a cord-hiding device or by selecting a cord color that blends with the wall. Steve Seitzman, owner of the Lighting Showroom in Manhattan, advises that when purchasing a frame light, consumers should prioritize models with porcelain sockets, solid brass fixtures, and tubular bulbs rather than candelabrum bulbs, as tubular bulbs offer superior light distribution. The market offers a variety of picture light brands, with Richardson Reflector and House of Troy being prominent examples. Richardson Reflector fixtures range from approximately $50 to $125 and are available in traditional styles, starting at four inches in length. House of Troy provides seven styles, comprising four traditional and three contemporary designs, available in seven finishes. Their lengths vary from four inches (around $20) to 36 inches (about $160). A more recent technological advancement in picture lighting involves the use of miniature halogen bulbs, which deliver intense illumination and are available in small versions starting at $100.
Additional factors to consider when choosing individual picture lights include the desired light intensity, whether a soft or bright glow is preferred, and how the wall color interacts with the light, as some colors absorb light while others reflect it. Several Manhattan-based retailers stock a variety of picture lights. A.P.F. Inc. carries both Richardson Reflector and House of Troy lines. Bowery Lighting, with three locations, offers lower-priced options from Satco and House of Troy, and its 132 Bowery location also features a high-tech French halogen light with a dimmer switch, priced at $200. Guttmann Picture Frame Associates supplies Richardson Reflector lights in chrome and brass and provides refinishing services to match frames. Julius Lowy Frame and Restoring Company also stocks Richardson Reflector lights and offers color matching. Lee's Studio Gallery carries more affordable brands like Lectra and Roxter, costing between $20 and $40, and can special-order the German Omega light, a slim strip of halogen bulbs that attaches to the back of the frame, with prices starting at $99. The Lighting Showroom stocks House of Troy lights in antique brass finish and can order other finishes.
Beyond lighting, the article also discusses custom-ordered nameplates for artwork, often seen in museums and galleries, which identify the artist. These can be commissioned from certain frame shops, including A.P.F., Guttmann, and Lowy. Typically gilded, these plates can be customized to match the frame. Prices range from approximately $20 to $75, depending on size and the number of letters, with orders usually taking one to two weeks. Other establishments that create such plaques include Malcolm & Hayes Inc., which machine-engraves brass plates for 35 cents per letter plus a $7.50 plate fee (with a $10 minimum), and also works with aluminum, sterling silver, and other metals. S. W. Reese & Company, known for industrial markers, has recently begun offering metal nameplates for artwork in aluminum, brass, stainless-steel, and bronze, starting at $15. They also provide black laminated plastic plaques with white lettering starting at $7.50, with the total cost based on the letter count. Delivery for these plaques typically takes about a week.
