8 Things That Make Your Home Feel Less Finished

Many homeowners aim for a complete and aesthetically pleasing living space, yet often encounter a persistent feeling that something is amiss, even when furniture is appropriately scaled and paint colors are well-chosen. This common experience led Stephanie Purzycki and Kaitlin Madden to establish The Finish, a platform designed to offer expert design advice to individuals without the budget for professional interior designers. Purzycki, owner of Drive Hospitality, and Madden, global editor-in-chief of Real Homes, recognized a market need for accessible guidance on achieving a truly finished look in a home. They emphasize that the 'finishing touches' are crucial for transforming a space into an intentionally designed, personalized environment. Without these details, a room can feel incomplete, leaving homeowners puzzled about how to bridge the gap between almost-finished and fully polished. Several key elements contribute to a room feeling unfinished. Firstly, absent wall art can make a space feel sterile and unwelcoming, regardless of the quality of furniture. The solution lies in choosing art that resonates with personal taste, without necessarily being expensive. Framed children's drawings or affordable prints can create a beloved gallery wall. Secondly, inadequate window treatments are a common oversight. While serving practical purposes like privacy and light control, they also add warmth, color, pattern, and aesthetic appeal. Choosing the right type of window treatment—curtains, drapes, blinds, shutters, or shades—and ensuring they are appropriately sized and full, can significantly enhance a room's completeness and even improve sound absorption. Ignoring them can leave a room feeling bare and ungrounded. A third mistake is selecting the wrong rug, particularly one that is too small. A rug that doesn't properly anchor the furniture can throw off the room's scale and make it feel incomplete. The general guideline is that at least the front legs of all living room furniture, or all chair legs in a dining room, should rest on the rug. Fourthly, a haphazardly decorated space, resulting from impulse purchases without a coherent plan, often lacks cohesion. Designers recommend creating mood boards and sticking to a defined style and color palette to ensure all elements work together harmoniously. Incorporating unique, slightly imperfect accent pieces can add personality without sacrificing overall unity. Fifth, dull or outdated paint can significantly detract from a room's finished feel. A fresh coat of paint, whether a new color or a touch-up of the existing one, can instantly revitalize a space, adding personalization and a sense of completeness. Sixth, dingy or insufficient lighting is another culprit. Relying solely on overhead lights can make a room feel stark. Layering various light sources, such as ceiling lights, wall sconces, table lamps, and floor lamps, creates a more inviting and finished atmosphere. Adjustable dimmers further enhance adaptability. Seventh, monotony, characterized by a single color palette without varied textures or patterns, can make a room feel lifeless. Incorporating at least two of these three elements—texture, color, and pattern—even within a neutral scheme, adds dynamic interest and warmth. Lastly, a lack of personal touches leaves a home feeling generic and incomplete. Infusing a space with meaningful mementos, cherished books, and family photos is essential for making it feel truly personal and lived-in. For a cohesive look, photographs can be printed in black and white. Ultimately, a truly finished home is a reflection of its inhabitants, evolving with their memories and life experiences, and feeling both visually pleasing and emotionally resonant. #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #DecoratingTips #RoomFinishing #WallArt #WindowTreatments #AreaRugs #LightingDesign #PersonalizedSpace #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #DecoratingTips #RoomFinishing #WallArt #WindowTreatments #AreaRugs #LightingDesign #PersonalizedSpace
