6 Colors Designers Say to Skip in 2026—Yes, Even This Popular Neutral

As 2025 progresses, interior designers are already looking ahead to 2026, offering insights into paint colors that may fall out of vogue. While personal preference plays a significant role in home decor, staying informed about trends can help maintain a fresh and contemporary aesthetic. Several paint colors are identified as ones designers recommend avoiding in the upcoming year. Stark, cool-toned whites are anticipated to remain out of favor. Designers describe these 'icy whites' as clinical, reflecting light without engaging with it, and leaving rooms feeling unfinished. Instead, warmer whites with greater depth, such as ivory or plaster finishes like Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee, are preferred for their softer, more dimensional appearance. Bold primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—are considered too one-dimensional and visually chaotic for interior spaces in 2026. While primary hues are not entirely off-limits, designers suggest opting for richer, more saturated, or muted shades. The key is to select versions of these colors that offer more complexity and sophistication rather than their basic, intense forms. Similarly, neon brights are expected to be unpopular in the coming year. These high-voltage colors can create visual noise and contribute to feelings of chaos and agitation within a home environment. For those desiring bold color, the recommendation is to choose rich, dimensional hues. Examples include deep ochre, oxblood, or moody sage, which can energize a room without overwhelming it. The widespread 'millennial gray' trend has led designers to discourage the use of cool gray tones. However, gray itself is not entirely out. The preferred approach for 2026 involves incorporating warm, layered grays that provide depth and dimension. This includes shades like greige, mushroom, taupe, and other soft, earthy neutrals, which evoke a sense of comfort and invitation. Powder blue, despite its association with a cottagecore aesthetic, often appears flat in interiors and can feel nostalgic without substance. Designers suggest moving towards bolder blue options, such as matte lapis or deep, inky navy blue. Alternatively, light, muted blue paint colors with subtle gray undertones are also considered on-trend, offering a calming effect without the flatness of powder blue. Chalky light pink is another color designers caution against. Frequently used in nurseries or young girls' rooms as a shortcut to softness, it often results in a washed-out and overly sentimental look. For 2026, the preference is for pink paints that offer more structure and depth, such as muted rose, warm earthy pinks, or dusky pinky beiges, providing a more refined and substantial feel. #PaintColors #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecor #DesignersRecommendations #ColorTrends #NeutralPaint #WarmWhites #EarthyNeutrals #HomeImprovement #PaintColors #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecor #DesignersRecommendations #ColorTrends #NeutralPaint #WarmWhites #EarthyNeutrals #HomeImprovement
