A Conversation With Lebanese Interior Designer Bachir Nader On His Luxury-Driven Designs
Lebanese interior architect Bachir Nader, known for his luxury-driven designs, shares insights into his career and design philosophy. Nader's journey into interior design was an accidental yet fortunate turn of events. Initially intending to study pharmacy, logistical constraints led him to enroll in an interior design course at USEK: The Holy Spirit University of Kaslik in Lebanon. This unexpected path ignited a lifelong passion, transforming his curiosity for creating something out of empty spaces into a thriving profession. After completing a master's degree in interior design in 1999 and another in scenography from École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ESAD), Strasbourg, in 2002, Nader worked as a freelance interior designer across the Middle East and Europe for several years.
In 2008, Nader established Bachir Nader Studio in Beirut, Lebanon. His firm has since undertaken over 100 commercial and residential projects globally, including in the Gulf region, Paris, London, and New York, earning several awards. He particularly enjoys residential projects, believing they offer a unique opportunity to reflect an individual's identity and create an exclusive sense of comfort. Nader defines ultimate luxury as the harmonious combination of elements within an interior design project that ensure longevity and identity, thereby adding value and a decadent feel.
His first significant project, at 22, involved transforming a historic Lebanese house in Beirut’s Monot district into a lounge bar named Fusion. Nader successfully blended modern aesthetics with respect for the building's historical Lebanese architecture, aiming to preserve its past while adapting it for contemporary use. This project established his reputation as a young, innovative designer in the region.
Nader's design philosophy is rooted in two core principles: understanding the inherent energy and context of a space, including its connection to the neighborhood, heritage, and architecture; and deeply comprehending the client's needs, lifestyle, and dreams. He strives to create a positive connection between an inanimate place and the human beings who inhabit it, ensuring a smooth transition between the interior and exterior environments.
Notable award-winning projects include the Braai Restaurant and Lounge in Beirut's Achrafieh district, which received the Golden Award for best interiors and the Platinum Award for best design firm regionally at the International Arabia Property Awards in 2013. This project marked a pivotal moment in his career. His firm later received the Best Company for Leadership award at the IAIR Corporate Awards in 2014, further cementing its international recognition. Nader's designs are heavily influenced by his extensive global travels, where he studies local lifestyles, design, and architecture, allowing diverse cultures and natural elements to inspire his work. He approaches each project as a full sensory experience, meticulously crafting every detail to bear his signature style. Currently, Nader is working on the Carlton project in Raouché, Beirut, which comprises four apartments inspired by ancient French castles. This project challenges him to merge modernity and technology with classical French style, necessitating extensive research and global travel to source unique art pieces and design elements. The interiors feature expansive ceilings, grand dining areas with hand-engraved wood and brass, and unexpected modern elements like a hidden cinema, creating a regal yet contemporary atmosphere.
Another significant project is the TJ apartment on Rue Clemenceau Street in Beirut, completed in 2017. This residential space, designed with a soothing grey palette, marble flooring, and custom lighting, offers a tranquil haven. Nader utilized a limited material palette of marble, steel, brass, and wood, achieving purity in design through elaborate shelving and seamless transitions between rooms. He expresses pride in contributing to Lebanon's vibrant design scene while maintaining his unique approach. Nader views each project as a sacred responsibility, aiming for designs that age gracefully and resonate long after their creation.
