R5 Designers at Home

This article features five prominent designers from the Westchester area, showcasing their personal homes and design philosophies. Each designer offers unique insights into their style, how they've transformed their living spaces, and the inspiration behind their choices. Stephen and Gail Huberman of SGH Designs Inc. in Pound Ridge, partners in both life and design for over 30 years, transformed a 1970s ranch into a sophisticated home. Their design emphasizes superb finishes, soaring ceilings, and custom architectural elements. They leverage their extensive network of craftspeople, evident in every wall and surface of their home. Their global travels influence their eclectic collections of art, sculpture, wine labels, monkey memorabilia, and flea market finds, creating a personalized and character-filled space that, as Stephen admits, couldn't be replicated for a client due to the lifetime spent curating these items. Key features include cream lacquered side tables, a 1920s art deco chair in tiger print, a woven leather rug, taupe silk walls, and a custom stainless-steel mesh fireplace surround. A custom console made from an old iron gate fragment and antique lamps add to the unique aesthetic. The breakfast room features a sepia monkey-themed mural by Kaye Lowinger, a sky-blue barrel ceiling with a trellis effect, and a checkerboard floor with decorative paint. The dining room boasts corrugated cardboard wallpaper painted and lacquered, and a tray ceiling created by extending into the attic. Gregory Allan Cramer, a designer and general contractor from Scarsdale, lovingly restored a 3,000-square-foot stucco home over five years. Cramer, who trained as a fine artist and glassblower, brings an artist's eye to his designs, seamlessly blending 15th-century Italian icons with 1950s furniture and Salvation Army finds. His master bedroom features serene blues, jaunty stripes, Danish modern chairs, a stainless-steel table, and silk bed linens of his own design. The dining room includes mixed chrome chairs with Donghia fabric, a contemporary wooden table with a custom beveled glass top, and a 19th-century electrified iron chandelier with beeswax candle sleeves. A 19th-century Tibetan console, a 1970s serigraph, and an Egyptian rug complete the space. The living room showcases Christopher Hyland mohair couches, a lacquered Baker coffee table, and a large graphic artwork by Nat Cole, complemented by steel frame captain chairs from Windows on the World. Kim Freeman of Kim Freeman Style & Design in New Castle revitalized her childhood home, built by her parents in 1964. Despite initially not wanting to be an interior designer, Freeman, a former magazine editor and stylist, embraced her passion, honed during her ten years in France. Her home is a welcoming, unfussy space featuring warm woods, white linens, curated collections, and dramatic stonework, reflecting her love for French textiles and antiques. Highlights include an antique pine cupboard holding vintage suitcases, an Early American iron bed with white linens and a turquoise bamboo blanket chest, and a master bedroom with family memorabilia and a flax linen headboard. A cast-iron stove from Sing Sing, oak floors installed without nails, and a stone fireplace designed by Freeman using Pocono Glacier stone are also prominent. Michele Rudolph of Riverside Design in Pound Ridge, an architect, interior designer, and artist, designed her home to maximize light and views of her landscaped property. Built by her husband, Marc VandenHoeck, the home features clean surfaces, crisp moldings, and an economy of form, complemented by her husband's preference for quiet neutrals. The dining room includes a Christie's table with leather Breuer-style seating and a family chandelier. Rudolph designed the mantle and glass mosaic fireplace surround. The master bedroom has a Chinese reproduction bedside chest and a daybed from Crate & Barrel with Donghia fabric. The living room features a moody painting by her son, a portrait of her husband by his grandmother, inherited end tables, and striking floral arrangements in Victorian funerary vases. Soaring ceilings and glass walls frame a stone fireplace made from local stone. Susan Thorn of Susan Thorn Interiors, Inc. in Cross River transformed an abandoned cinder-block structure into a French-style main house with two identical outbuildings. With over 30 years of experience, Thorn is known for her warm, sophisticated interiors, incorporating continental and American antiques, rich floral fabrics, and exquisite lighting. Her guest room features an inlaid French antique desk and an antique caned chair. The dining room includes a crystal and iron chandelier from Buenos Aires, Aubusson pillows on neutral sofas, and a red lacquered coffee table. The master bedroom offers skirted armchairs by the fire, an Hudson River School oil painting, and framed 18th-century bird silhouettes, alongside her collection of boxes displayed under a French marquetry table. #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #LuxuryInteriors #CustomDesign #EclecticStyle #TraditionalDesign #ModernDesign #ArchitecturalRenovation #WestchesterHomes #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #LuxuryInteriors #CustomDesign #EclecticStyle #TraditionalDesign #ModernDesign #ArchitecturalRenovation #WestchesterHomes
