Using the Shark StainStriker Is Oddly Satisfying (Albeit Kinda Disgusting)
The Shark StainStriker is a portable carpet and upholstery cleaner designed to tackle various stains and odors with an emphasis on ease of use and portability. This review details its effectiveness across multiple real-world scenarios, assessing its performance in stain and odor removal, setup simplicity, and overall convenience.
The device features a straightforward setup, diverging from complex instruction manuals often associated with vacuum cleaners. It includes two large tanks for clean and dirty water and a smaller tank for Shark OXY Multiplier solution, which enhances spot cleaning. Users fill the CarpetXpert tank with water and Deep Clean Pro cleaning solution, and the small tank with the OXY Multiplier solution. Once tanks are filled and the machine is plugged in, it is ready for operation.
The StainStriker underwent four specific tests. The first involved a urine stain on a pack-and-play mat. Utilizing the dedicated Pet Mess Tool, which prevents debris and liquid from entering the machine's core, the StainStriker effectively removed the urine stain and associated odors after a few passes and drying.
For the second test, dried fingerpaint stains on a shaggy rug were targeted. After applying the cleaning solution and allowing it to set, the regular hand tool's scrubber was used to massage the stain before suctioning. Approximately 90 percent of the stain was removed, leaving only a faint tint, with one of three similar stains completely disappearing.
The third test addressed mud and grime on a low-pile outdoor rug. Following Shark’s recommendation, the rug was first vacuumed to remove loose debris. The StainStriker then extracted more debris than the initial vacuuming, restoring the rug to its original appearance. The dirty water collected underscored the extent of the grime removed, despite the rug's pattern effectively concealing dirt.
Finally, the StainStriker was used on an old basement sofa with deeply embedded stains from various incidents over 12 years, including pen marks, spilled wine, Diet Coke, and baby spit-up. The OXY Multiplier solution was applied and allowed to set before scrubbing. The machine extracted chocolate milk-colored water, indicating significant dirt removal. While some stains vanished entirely, persistent ink marks and older upholstery stains were about 70 percent diminished, demonstrating the machine's limitations with extremely aged and stubborn discolorations.
Overall, the Shark StainStriker, weighing less than 9 pounds, is praised for its portability, intuitive design, and strong stain and odor removal capabilities. Its Pet Mess Tool is noted as a particularly useful feature. The main drawbacks identified are the necessity of purchasing proprietary cleaning solutions and the absence of a cordless option, though battery life might be a concern for a cordless variant. The machine is recommended for those frequently dealing with household spills and pet messes, with the caveat that immediate action on stains yields the best results.
