Modernized Details and Historic Charm Mingle in This 100-Year-Old California Kitchen

In Santa Barbara, California, a 1930s home underwent a significant kitchen renovation led by interior designer Kishani Perera and architect Tom Henson of Becker Henson Niksto Architects. The project focused on modernizing the 550-square-foot kitchen while retaining the historic character of the 100-year-old house. The designers' approach involved a careful balance of contemporary updates and the integration of early 20th-century design elements. One of the primary goals was to update the kitchen's functionality, which is often a necessity in older homes, while preserving its aesthetic integrity. This was achieved by subtly incorporating modern appliances and features. For instance, new additions like a brand-new refrigerator were concealed to maintain the vintage look of the space. The renovation also introduced several design elements that paid homage to the home's original era. A vaulted ceiling was added, contributing to the kitchen's historic ambiance, and wooden counter stools were chosen to complement the existing architectural style. Perera emphasized the importance of honoring the home's past, noting her appreciation for its role in Santa Barbara's history. The material palette for the kitchen included light gray textured field tiles on the entire back wall, specifically Waterworks' Magma in a matte gray crackle finish, which Perera highlighted for its beauty. The cabinets were painted in a vibrant Tucson Teal by Benjamin Moore, providing a striking contrast against the plaster walls. Warmth was brought into the space through the incorporation of various materials such as walnut, copper, and brass elements. Perera's attention to detail extended to the selection of hardware, with refrigerator pulls chosen to harmonize with the brass and wood accents throughout the kitchen. A notable personal touch was the inclusion of the client's inherited set of well-loved copper pots, which were hung from a custom-made rack. This detail not only added to the timeless feel of the kitchen but also introduced a welcome touch of patina, further blending the old with the new. Kishani Perera, based in Los Angeles, has over two decades of experience designing homes across the country, having earned her interior design degree from UCLA in 1998. #KitchenDesign #HistoricRenovation #InteriorDesign #SantaBarbaraHomes #TraditionalModernBlend #CustomCabinetry #DesignerKitchens #HomeRenovation #KitchenDesign #HistoricRenovation #InteriorDesign #SantaBarbaraHomes #TraditionalModernBlend #CustomCabinetry #DesignerKitchens #HomeRenovation
