A Family’s Loft Inside a Former Chocolate Factory Takes a Candy-Colored Turn

The Musk Stick Apartment, located in a former chocolate factory in Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia, is a 1,000-square-foot warehouse conversion designed by Design + Diplomacy (D+D). This project aimed to blend the building's industrial heritage with a contemporary, playful aesthetic, drawing inspiration from both Steampunk and Memphis design styles. The original structure, dating back to the late 1800s, featured 16-foot ceilings, red steel beams, timber framing, concrete floors, and exposed brickwork, all of which were preserved and celebrated during the renovation. A central feature of the apartment is the "Pink Cube," a vibrant, sugar-sweet intervention that cleverly houses both the bathroom and laundry facilities. This bold and unapologetically colorful element serves as a visual and functional anchor in the open-plan space, and its hue is a playful nod to the classic Australian musk stick candy, giving the apartment its unique name. The integration of such a distinctive element demonstrates D+D's approach to transforming functional components into design features. A significant challenge during the renovation involved relocating the kitchen and dining area without disrupting the building's original steel-and-concrete structure. D+D addressed this by creating a raised platform, which not only defines distinct zones within the open-plan layout but also ingeniously conceals new plumbing and electrical infrastructure. Furthermore, an underutilized internal balcony was reabsorbed into the kitchen footprint, a strategic decision that maximized functionality and enhanced the natural light entering the space. The apartment serves as the permanent home for Mark and Vanessa Hartnell, medical professionals, and their two children and dog, Trevor. Although they temporarily relocated to country Victoria during the pandemic, they continue to use the apartment for holiday stays, commercial shoots, and regular visits to Melbourne. The design successfully balances the existing heritage elements, such as original sliding steel doors, steel-framed windows, and era-stamped beams, with contemporary and sometimes irreverent interventions. D+D's design philosophy involved embracing elements typically hidden in conventional renovations, transforming them into integral features. This included exposing copper tubing, making fittings visible, and even highlighting a laundry water tank. The overall result is a space that maintains its industrial core while exuding a playful and vibrant spirit, creating a unique and highly functional home within a historically rich building. #LoftConversion #WarehouseApartment #MemphisDesign #IndustrialStyle #ColorfulInteriors #AustralianHomes #InteriorRenovation #OpenPlanLiving #HeritageArchitecture #LoftConversion #WarehouseApartment #MemphisDesign #IndustrialStyle #ColorfulInteriors #AustralianHomes #InteriorRenovation #OpenPlanLiving #HeritageArchitecture
