Theory Audio Design Debuts Weatherproof Loudspeaker & New Architectural Subwoofers
Theory Audio Design recently unveiled new audio solutions at CEDIA 2023, including the sb25aw All-Weather Multi-Use Loudspeaker and two architectural subwoofers, the iws12-9 and iws12-6. These products aim to deliver professional-level audio performance in versatile and aesthetically conscious designs.
The sb25aw loudspeaker is a weatherized iteration of the company's sb25 indoor surface-mount speaker. Engineered for both indoor and outdoor environments, it is suitable for diverse applications such as hotel pools, outdoor shopping centers, restaurant outdoor seating, and residential entertainment areas. The speaker's design addresses the challenges of outdoor exposure, featuring a powder-coated and anodized extruded and machined aluminum enclosure, along with stainless steel components to prevent rust. Its "fully weatherized" construction includes a durable perforated stainless steel grille and a water-tight entry point for speaker cables, offering flexible mounting options for various installation needs, including porches, patios, pool decks, backyards, and yachts.
Measuring 21.5 inches high, 9.5 inches wide, and 3.8 inches deep, the sb25aw houses dual 5-inch carbon fiber woofers and a 1.4-inch "AdvancedPoly" high-frequency compression driver with a 125-degree axisymmetric waveguide. This configuration enables a wide bandwidth of 54Hz to 23kHz (-6dB) and a maximum output of 117dB SPL at 1 meter. The speaker offers selectable hi-z or low-z operating modes, enhancing system design flexibility. Theory Audio Design emphasizes its ability to blend seamlessly into architectural backgrounds while maintaining a premium aesthetic, with mounting options including z-clips for flat wall installation, compatibility with third-party mounts, an optional yoke mounting bracket for surface and pole mounting, and a universal mount adapter for VESA mounts or pan-and-tilt systems. An optional tabletop stand further expands its placement versatility.
Theory Audio Design also introduced its first architectural subwoofers: the iws12-6 and iws12-9. Both models incorporate a 12-inch long-throw woofer with a 4-inch voice coil, delivering identical acoustic performance but in different form factors to suit diverse installation environments, such as in-wall, on-wall, in-room, and ceiling-mounted setups. These passive subwoofers are designed to be driven by Theory’s Amplified Loudspeaker Controllers, ensuring optimal performance without requiring floor space for large cabinets.
The iws12-6 is specifically designed for flush installation into 2x6 stud walls, with an on-wall option that has a depth of 5.5 inches. The iws12-9, with dimensions of 34 inches wide, 14 inches high, and 9 inches deep, offers flexible mounting options including wall-mounting, ceiling-mounting, or suspension via an optional smart yoke bracket. It can also be placed on the floor using included feet. Both subwoofers provide a frequency response of 24Hz to 125Hz (±3dB), with usable bass extension down to 18Hz (-10dB), and are capable of producing up to 124dB of output at 1 meter. They feature a high sensitivity of 95.5dB and 700 watts of power handling. Theory Audio Design highlights that the 12-inch woofer is a professional-duty, high-efficiency driver specifically developed for architectural applications, encased in an optimally-tuned bass reflex enclosure.
These new products align with Theory Audio Design's philosophy of integrating professional-grade dynamics, efficiency, and durability with audiophile-level detail and resolution, through a full-system design approach that includes automatically-tailored loudspeaker DSP. Both the sb25aw loudspeaker and the iws12 series subwoofers are available for pre-order, with shipping expected to commence in Q4 2023.
