The 4 Best Outdoor Speakers of 2026 | Reviews by Wirecutter

This article provides a comprehensive guide to selecting the best outdoor speakers, catering to both traditional mounted options and landscape speakers designed to blend into outdoor environments. The author, Brent Butterworth, an audio gear expert with over 30 years of experience, outlines the methodology used for picking and testing these speakers, focusing on models under $350 per pair that are readily available to consumers and built to withstand various weather conditions. All speakers underwent a 10-hour music break-in period and were tested in a real backyard setting. For traditional outdoor speakers, the OSD Audio AP650 is recommended as the top pick. This speaker pair offers clear, full sound suitable for various music genres and can fill an area up to 1,500 square feet. It features a fully sealed design with an IPX6 rating, ensuring resistance to water and bugs, and boasts a rugged, powder-coated mounting bracket. However, it requires an external amplifier and speaker wire installation, and its bass output is limited compared to higher-end models. The Dayton Audio IO8XTB serves as the upgrade pick for traditional speakers, delivering significantly clearer sound and more powerful bass. While larger and more expensive, it provides a smoother audio experience across all music types and can produce loud, clear sound in an 1,800-square-foot backyard. It has an IP66 rating for dust and water resistance, though its grille is prone to denting and the binding posts are awkwardly positioned. For rock speakers, the Victrola Rock Speaker Connect is identified as the best option for casual listening due to its ease of setup and use. This battery-powered, Bluetooth-enabled speaker is rock-shaped and features a solar panel for charging, eliminating the need for constant plugging in. It offers a clear and reasonably full sound comparable to portable Bluetooth speakers, and multiple units can be wirelessly connected for larger coverage. However, its IP54 rating suggests limited protection against strong water blasts, and its bass performance is less robust than other picks. The OSD Audio BTR805 is the upgrade pick for rock speakers, offering powerful, yard-filling sound ideal for pool areas and larger gatherings. This pair includes built-in Bluetooth and amplification, simplifying installation, but requires a power outlet and a wired connection between the two speakers. Its power supply is IP67-rated, providing excellent waterproofing and dustproofing, and the speakers themselves are well-sealed and water-resistant. The article also considers other options, such as pendant-style landscape speakers like the Dayton Audio WP65BT and OSD Audio Forza 6 for overhead hanging, and wireless systems with a traditional look, like the OSD Audio BTP525 and BTP650. For budget-conscious buyers, the Dual Electronics LU53PW is suggested as a decent, inexpensive passive outdoor speaker set for casual background music, despite its limited bass and midrange emphasis. Various other models were tested and evaluated, highlighting common issues such as unbalanced sound, distortion, or lack of clarity, reinforcing the chosen recommendations. The author emphasizes the importance of weather and impact resistance, configuration options, cost-effectiveness, and direct availability to consumers when making selections.
