Spathiphyllum Is October’s Air-Purifying Plant of the Month
The Spathiphyllum, also known as the 'peace lily', has been selected as the Air So Pure plant of the Month for October, offering a timeless green companion that merges style with scientific air-purifying capabilities. As autumn progresses and people spend more time indoors, the importance of indoor air quality increases. The Spathiphyllum contributes to a healthier indoor environment by actively refreshing the air while enhancing the aesthetic of any space.
This plant is celebrated for its classic beauty, featuring deep-green, glossy leaves and distinctive white bracts, which are often mistaken for flowers. Its elegant, arching form complements both contemporary and traditional interior designs. The Spathiphyllum introduces warmth, atmosphere, and a sense of tranquility to various rooms, including living rooms, bedrooms, and workspaces, making it an ideal addition as daylight hours diminish during October.
Beyond its visual appeal, the Spathiphyllum is a scientifically proven air-purifier. NASA research from the 1980s first highlighted its effectiveness in filtering volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene. Subsequent studies have consistently confirmed these findings. Each Spathiphyllum in the Air So Pure collection undergoes rigorous testing by an independent research firm to ensure its efficacy in improving indoor air quality, providing consumers with a reliable product.
Spathiphyllums offer considerable versatility in styling due to their availability in a wide range of sizes. Smaller plants are suitable for enhancing cozy spots like shelves, coffee tables, or compact bathroom displays. Larger specimens can serve as prominent focal points in living areas, reception rooms, or open-plan offices. The variety in size and form allows for creative arrangements, including living green walls, tiered displays, or mixed-pot compositions that combine different textures, heights, and air-purifying benefits.
Caring for a Spathiphyllum involves simple practices to ensure its health and vitality. The plant thrives in bright, indirect light, with direct sunlight being avoided to prevent leaf scorching. Ideal spots include lightly shaded corners or areas with filtered light. The soil should be kept consistently moist, as the plant tolerates 'wet feet' better than many others due to its native swampy habitats. However, waterlogging should be prevented; it's best to re-water when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry. If wilting occurs, a quick drink usually revives the plant within hours.
High humidity and steady warmth are beneficial for Spathiphyllums. Regular misting can help prevent leaf tip burns and maintain lush foliage. During active growth periods in the summer, a monthly application of a balanced houseplant fertilizer supports growth and flowering. Maintenance also includes trimming yellowed or brown leaves and removing spent flowers at their base to redirect the plant’s energy towards healthy tissue development. It is important to note that while not toxic to touch, ingestion of Spathiphyllum can cause irritation due to certain compounds in its leaves and flowers. Therefore, it should be placed out of reach of curious pets and small children.
The Spathiphyllum plant of the month is cultivated by four distinguished Air So Pure partners: Bestplant, specializing in large plants; Concorde Plants, producing various varieties in 13 cm pots; KP Holland, focusing on breeding and production of compact sizes; and Van der Voort Potplanten, a breeder and producer offering a broad spectrum of pot sizes. These partners ensure a diverse supply, with over 40 Spathiphyllum species available, spanning 14 pot sizes and 16 varieties, ranging from 22 cm intimate shelf plants to dramatic 160 cm floor specimens.
Air So Pure, a collective of growers founded in 2007, transforms houseplants into extraordinary air purifiers. The brand originated from the discovery of the Spathiphyllum’s strong air-cleaning capabilities by Dutch growers, leading them to collaborate and establish a quality brand for scientifically proven beneficial indoor plants. Retailers are encouraged to showcase Spathiphyllums by emphasizing their air-purifying qualities and classic elegance, demonstrating versatile styling options, providing concise care tips, and highlighting the Air So Pure brand's commitment to rigorous testing and validation.
