Khalid Shafar’s Designs Have Stories to Tell

Khalid Shafar, an Emirati designer, has carved a unique niche in the design world, transforming everyday objects and cultural memories into functional art pieces. His journey into design began after nearly seven years in Marketing and Communication, a career path he initially pursued despite a long-standing aspiration to be a designer. After earning a Business Administration degree from the American University in Dubai, Shafar revisited his passion, completing a Fine Arts degree in Interior Design in 2005. By the end of 2009, he transitioned fully into design, solidifying his commitment with further studies at London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and the Centre for Fine Woodworking in New Zealand. Shafar’s academic and professional background, particularly his business acumen, provided him with a disciplined approach to design, enhancing his management and leadership skills. He launched his design studio in late 2010, quickly gaining recognition for creating distinctive interior space objects. A core philosophy for Shafar is that every design tells a story, a narrative crafted through a blend of creativity, practicality, and functionality. He often integrates elements of Emirati culture into his contemporary designs, drawing inspiration from his surroundings, his hometown of Dubai, and personal recollections. His design process is deeply influenced by his experiences. For example, “The Palm,” a coat hanger, is a direct result of a childhood memory of men climbing palm trees with ropes to harvest dates. Similarly, “Arabi,” a chandelier, reimagines the traditional Arabian men’s black headband, merging modern aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship. Shafar frequently employs wood in his creations, valuing its versatility and natural appeal. His works, including "THE NOMAD," the "BABYLON" installation, "THE TRAP" wall bookshelf, and "OCTA II" side table, are all highlighted on his Instagram, showcasing his diverse range and conceptual depth. One of his earliest and most notable pieces, the “Illusion Stool,” epitomizes his connection to Dubai’s rapid evolution. Having witnessed the city’s dramatic transformation over 30 years, Shafar translated the vibrant city lights into a functional piece. The stool, crafted from Danish sling fabric stretched over an ash wood framework, features woven lines that reflect light, creating an optical illusion. The design plays on the tension between these lines and the frame, offering both a unique visual experience and practical utility, such as a seating option and a storage space for magazines. Shafar’s ability to weave personal history, cultural heritage, and contemporary design principles into his creations defines his unique aesthetic and storytelling approach. #KhalidShafar #InteriorDesign #EmiratiDesign #FurnitureDesign #ContemporaryDesign #DubaiDesign #CulturalInspiration #ProductDesign #DesignPhilosophy #KhalidShafar #InteriorDesign #EmiratiDesign #FurnitureDesign #ContemporaryDesign #DubaiDesign #CulturalInspiration #ProductDesign #DesignPhilosophy
