Shamir Shah Talks Residential Design on Hello Cindy!
Shamir Shah of Shamir Shah Design joined Interior Design Editor in Chief Cindy Allen for an episode of 'Hello Cindy!', where he discussed his experiences with residential design, particularly in the context of the shift to remote work during the initial stages of the pandemic. Shah is currently based in his Litchfield County, Connecticut, home, finding serenity in observing the natural landscape.
The overnight shift to working from home in March significantly altered Shah's routine, as he typically maintains a strict separation between his professional and personal life. Despite this, his small office, known for handling substantial projects often with returning clients, successfully transitioned to digital operations. Shah confirmed that his team is healthy and adhering to safety precautions. He emphasized the firm's ability to adapt and continue delivering projects effectively during challenging times, showcasing resilience and operational flexibility.
Shah shared his philosophy on residential projects, aligning with Fran Lebowitz's view that people should spend time outdoors. This perspective notably influenced a project in New York's Gramercy Park, where Shah incorporated a green wall. This design element was a departure from his usual approach but proved to be refreshing and beneficial for the space. The Gramercy Park project received significant recognition, gracing the cover of Interior Design magazine and winning a 2018 Best of Year award for Midsize Apartment, highlighting the firm's innovative and award-winning design capabilities.
Currently, Shah's firm is involved in another large-scale apartment project that includes amenity spaces, demonstrating a continuous engagement with high-profile residential developments. The firm also completed a condominium project on Madison Avenue, initially designed by the late architect Karl Fischer. This building spans 32 floors and offers extensive amenities, including two pools and entertainment rooms. Shah's artistic vision is evident in the lobby, which features a dark and textural mural fabricated in South Africa and assembled on-site, illustrating his dedication to unique and impactful design elements.
Another example of Shamir Shah Design's commitment to integrating art into residential spaces is a tile mural for a Santa Monica apartment development. Cindy Allen praised this particular installation as an example of "remarkable art for a rental building," underscoring the firm's ability to bring high-quality, artistic design to various residential categories. Shah's team is actively developing new designs and prototypes to address current challenges, reflecting his belief that design serves as a solution to problems. He concluded the discussion by encouraging viewers to remain observant and find beauty in unexpected places, reinforcing a message of appreciation for the world around them, even amidst adversity.
