How I transformed our narrow rental hallway – 'It's one of the few places where I genuinely don’t mind magnolia'

Ammarah Hasham, an Open House contributor for Ideal Home, shares her experience in transforming a narrow and characterless hallway in her rental home to better suit her family's needs. She highlights that while many rental properties feature narrow hallways to maximize space in other rooms, these areas often receive little decorative attention due to their challenging dimensions. However, Hasham argues that a hallway serves as the first impression of a home, akin to a movie trailer, and thus warrants thoughtful design. Hasham begins by embracing the existing magnolia paint in her hallway, a color often criticized but which she finds beneficial in this particular space. She notes that magnolia brightens the area and reflects light effectively, an advantage in a narrow setting. To infuse personality and color, she created a gallery wall using a mix of frame sizes to add height and a playful display. Crucially, she ensured the installation was renter-friendly, utilizing Command strips, lightweight frames, and minimal small nails. By drawing colors from other rooms, the gallery wall establishes a sense of continuity throughout the home, resulting in a vibrant, personalized hallway where the magnolia paint provides a suitable backdrop. To balance the graphic elements of the gallery wall, Hasham incorporated a floral traditional rug. This rug not only adds warmth to the space but also grounds the artwork, preventing it from appearing too stark. Despite its potentially small size for design purists, the rug holds sentimental value and effectively conceals marks, making it a practical and cherished addition. A statement light fixture, a large pleated red lampshade from H&M Home, was chosen to push design boundaries and express personal style. Hasham advises that a larger light fixture can create an illusion of grandeur in a small space, acting as a jewel-like focal point that is also easily reversible. A mirror was strategically placed by the door to expand the narrow space visually by reflecting light, making the area feel less confined. Frosted vinyl film was added to the door to soften harsh incoming light. The mirror also serves a practical purpose, allowing for quick checks before leaving the house. Hasham included a metal stool from Habitat to provide a welcoming seat for guests, particularly for tasks like tying shoelaces, demonstrating thoughtful hospitality while maintaining clear movement space due to its appropriate size. Lastly, Hasham introduced a touch of greenery with a pothos vine, which trails gently down the wall. Recognizing her challenges with plant care, she chose a low-maintenance option that doesn't require a heavy pot. This plant adds an organic element and a natural welcome to the hallway. She concludes by integrating whimsical yet useful items, such as a decorative clog with a brush, showcasing how even small additions can infuse character and practicality into a limited space. These design choices collectively transform a once neglected area into a functional, inviting, and personalized entrance. #RentalHomeDecor #HallwayDesign #SmallSpaceSolutions #RenterFriendly #InteriorStyling #GalleryWall #StatementLighting #HomePersonalization #BudgetDecor #RentalHomeDecor #HallwayDesign #SmallSpaceSolutions #RenterFriendly #InteriorStyling #GalleryWall #StatementLighting #HomePersonalization #BudgetDecor
