A room with a shockingly radical solution to finding its focal point: bricking up a window and building a new fireplace

This article describes Emma Burns' innovative approach to transforming a sitting room in her 19th-century London townhouse into an elegant bedroom. As one of the principal design directors at Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, Burns faced the challenge of creating a strong focal point in a room that previously lacked one. Her unconventional solution involved bricking up a south-facing window and installing a new fireplace in its place. While acknowledging the sacrifice of natural light, Burns emphasized the importance of architectural grounding in a room's design. The inspiration for the bedroom's deep color scheme came from an unexpected source: the crocodile leather strap of her watch. When asked about her preferred colors, Burns' daughter, for whom the room was designed, pointed to the watch strap, leading to the selection of a dusty-chocolate hue. This consistent color is applied to the walls, woodwork, curtains, bed head, and valance, creating a cohesive and enveloping atmosphere. The paint used was 5-063 from Papers and Paints' 1950s collection, while the fabric chosen was Nicky Haslam's Chocolate Glazed Linen. To introduce a touch of visual interest and prettiness, Emma incorporated roller blinds in the Wildflower pattern from Chelsea Textiles, a design she admired after seeing it on Keira Knightley in 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. Further details of the room's furnishings are highlighted. A handsome semainier, a tall and narrow chest of drawers, is positioned in the small space between the windows. This piece is adorned with a 1960s Murano glass lamp featuring a pin-prick shade, sourced from Robert Kime. The bedside lamps are Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler’s classic Queen Anne design, distinguished by their flattened oval shades. A white bedspread, acquired in Delhi, provides a crisp and refreshing contrast against the rich brown tones of the room. The article showcases how a bold design decision, such as sacrificing a window for a fireplace, can fundamentally reshape a space and establish a strong design narrative. The careful selection of colors, fabrics, and decorative elements contributes to a sophisticated and unified aesthetic, demonstrating Burns' expertise in creating a luxurious and personalized interior. #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #BedroomDesign #LondonTownhouse #FocalPoint #ColorScheme #LuxuryInteriors #EmmaBurns #TraditionalDesign #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #BedroomDesign #LondonTownhouse #FocalPoint #ColorScheme #LuxuryInteriors #EmmaBurns #TraditionalDesign
