duffy london pay homage to ancient architecture with hand-carved marble 'civilization' tables
Duffy London has unveiled its new 'Civilization' collection of hand-carved marble coffee and dining tables, drawing inspiration from the grandeur and intricate artistry of ancient temples and monuments. This limited-edition series comprises three distinct tables: 'Petra', 'Kailasa', and 'Hegra'. Each piece is meticulously modeled after iconic man-made structures that were carved directly from natural rock formations with exceptional skill. Specifically, 'Petra' takes its design cues from the Al-Kazneh Temple at Petra in Jordan, 'Hegra' from the Qasr-al-Farid Tomb in Mada'in Saleh, Saudi Arabia, and 'Kailasa' from the Kailasa Temple within the Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, India.
Chris Duffy, the founder of Duffy London, articulated the collection's core objective: to leverage the ancient art form of sculpture, employing traditional materials, tools, and techniques, to re-envision and pay tribute to these magnificent historical structures. The intent is to craft contemporary furniture designs that not only celebrate the aesthetic beauty of these ancient sites but also honor the incredible craftsmanship and artistic prowess of their original creators. The production of each 'Civilization' table demands a high degree of skill and technical expertise, involving time-honored sculpting methods, which ensures that every table is a unique creation with no two pieces being identical.
The manufacturing process for each table is labor-intensive and spans several months. It begins with the careful selection of a singular block of marble stone. Master craftspeople then embark on the intricate carving process, using traditional techniques. This involves chipping away at the rock with pitching chisels and hammers to gradually reveal the intended form. Following the initial shaping, finer details are introduced through precise, smaller strokes utilizing a specialized array of tools, including delicate rasps and riffler files. The final stages involve smoothing and polishing the stone with sandpaper and emery cloths, which not only refine the surface but also enhance the marble's inherent luster and natural patterns. The integration of an elliptical, 160mm polished-glass top onto each table introduces a contemporary element, effectively blending ancient materials and craftsmanship with modern design aesthetics.
Each table within this exclusive collection is custom-made to order, offering a variety of colored marble options. These options include classic white and black, pristine pure white, rose-veined green, and vibrant red and orange. The 'Civilization' collection is available in two functional formats: a dining table and a coffee table. The dining table measures 250cm in length, 120cm in width, and 75cm in height, priced at £39,500. The coffee table has dimensions of 180cm in length, 100cm in width, and 45cm in height, priced at £27,500. The marble types available include Encarnado Pedra Furada (red/orange), Pele Tigre (white & black), solid black, Rosa Veios Verde (rose-veined green), Ruivina Escuro (black/grey), and Mármore Estremoz (white). This collection represents a convergence of historical reverence and contemporary furniture design, emphasizing the enduring beauty and complexity of hand-carved marble.
