This Master Bedroom Has a Secret Hideaway for Snagging a Little Alone Time
Designer Kristine Paige Kamenstein of Jackson Paige Interiors aimed to create a master bedroom that is both sophisticated and playful, focusing on a restorative atmosphere that evokes the feeling of lying in grass and watching clouds. For this master retreat, part of the Whole Home Concept House, she selected an ethereal wallcovering named Flight by Phillip Jeffries. To balance the soft, ethereal mood, she incorporated deeply saturated blacks with mustardy yellow, blush pinks, and silvery grays, ensuring the space didn't feel overly feminine. A notable feature of the room is the wall-to-wall, built-in window seat, which is flanked by two floor-to-ceiling drapery panels. These panels can be closed off to create a private hideaway for parents, offering a space for reading, meditation, or simply escaping from the children. Kamenstein emphasizes the importance of these quiet moments for reconnection.
Adjacent to the master bedroom, accessible through a spa-like bathroom, is a master closet designed by Joy Huber and Rachel Haag of Castle Homes. This closet is organized to feel like a thoughtfully curated boutique. It features a central island for storing jewelry and intimates, and glass cabinetry along the walls for displaying handbags and accessories. Additionally, the closet includes a dedicated laundry care corner equipped with LG's freestanding steamer, the Styler, and stackable washer and dryer units, streamlining household chores by consolidating laundry functions within the master suite. The overall design of the master bedroom and its adjoining spaces prioritizes comfort, privacy, and functionality, creating a comprehensive and serene retreat within the home. The designer highlights the wallpaper as her favorite element, noting its immersive and striking yet serene quality, paired with an edgy touch that complements the chosen color palette. The process of selecting fabrics and trims involved careful consideration to balance the powerful wallpaper with vibrant but not overwhelming colors for pillows and drapes. The drapery, made from a black charcoal gray linen, extends as high as possible, framed by elegant diamond trim from Samuel & Sons, to create a dramatic and private enclosure for the window seat. The area rug, discovered serendipitously by an associate, combines aloe, linen, and silk, featuring a contemporary chic design with an Art Deco feel that integrates the room's color scheme of black, white, and pink. The article also mentions unexpected pieces like a bar cart used as a bedside table and a console made from repurposed steel tubes, adding unique character to the room. The importance of a comfortable mattress is underscored as crucial for rest and relaxation, contributing to the overall sense of support and serenity in the room. The transformation of the room into a tranquil, intimate, and functional space for adults is highlighted as a key achievement of the design.
