The Sims 4: Interior Decorator Career Guide
The Sims 4 introduces the Interior Decorator Career through the Dream Home Decorator game pack, offering players an immersive experience beyond traditional active careers. This career allows Sims to work as interior designers, taking on various gigs that involve renovating homes and commercial venues. Unlike typical careers with fixed work hours, the Interior Decorator career focuses on completing gigs, similar to the Paranormal Investigator and Actor/Actress careers, with elements of freelance work. Success in this career is tied to the quality of completed design jobs, the Sim's reputation, and the ability to attract new clients through positive word-of-mouth.
Promotions in the Interior Decorator career track are achieved by successfully completing gigs and are rewarded with new interactions and expanded gig opportunities. As Sims advance through the 10 career levels, they unlock abilities to undertake larger projects, including commercial renovations and, at higher levels, celebrity home gigs if the Get Famous expansion is owned. The career emphasizes flexibility, allowing players to choose when to accept gigs, but highlights the importance of consistent work to maintain a steady income. Gigs must be completed between 9 AM and 9 PM on the day they are accepted; failure to do so results in a failed gig.
The career involves several types of renovation gigs, categorized by scope, budget, and payout. These include Room Renovation, which focuses on redecorating a single room; Room Addition, where Sims add a completely new room to a lot; Level Renovation, involving the redecoration of an entire floor; and Level Addition, the most time-consuming but highest-paying gig, requiring the addition of a new floor. Commercial Renovations become available at level 5, enabling Sims to redesign various commercial lots such as bars, cafes, gyms, and libraries. The availability of certain subcategories within these gig types depends on whether specific expansion packs are owned.
Successfully completing gigs requires careful client interaction and adherence to their preferences. Upon arriving at a gig location, Sims must engage with clients to learn their likes and dislikes. The career panel displays up to five known preferences, which can be further explored through career-specific interactions. Even a beautifully designed renovation will not be well-received if it does not align with the client's expectations. The Observant trait, obtained from Satisfaction Points Rewards, can aid in understanding client preferences more effectively.
Reputation plays a crucial role in the Interior Decorator career, functioning similarly to the fame system. A high reputation can lead to more clients, repeat business, and even in-game gifts, while a negative reputation may reduce available gig options. From level 8, Sims can influence their reputation by writing Interior Decorator articles. Professional conduct during client interactions is paramount; inappropriate actions like flirting or undressing can result in being fired from a gig. Players must also manage the budget and any limitations specified for the gig, which are displayed in Build mode. Filtering items by color and decor style in Build mode can assist in matching client preferences. Adding items related to a client's hobby, even if not central to the room's purpose, can also contribute to client satisfaction.
Finally, the renovation reveal is a critical step in completing a gig. Players can take 'Before' and 'After' pictures as a work task, which are then used during the reveal to showcase the transformation. The reveal interaction must be performed before 9 PM. While a full reveal event with client interactions is available, players can skip directly to the results if time is short. After the reveal, clients provide feedback, ranging from negative to positive, and the Sim receives their payout, along with an update on their career performance and reputation. The lasting impact of renovations on the game world, with renovated spaces remaining as designed, provides a unique and rewarding aspect to this career.
