Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer review of home makeover sim

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is a spin-off title for the Nintendo 3DS that departs from the traditional Animal Crossing gameplay loop by focusing solely on interior and exterior design. Instead of managing a personal home and an entire village, players assume the role of an interior designer working for Nook's Homes. The core mechanic involves clients, who are familiar Animal Crossing characters, commissioning players to design their houses based on specific themes or requests, such as creating a 'forest of books' or a space 'for telling scary stories'. Each commission requires the use of a few mandatory furniture items, but players have considerable freedom to add other furnishings and decorations they deem appropriate or aesthetically pleasing. The game introduces a new interface for placing furniture, utilizing a 2D flatplan on the touchscreen, which streamlines the design process compared to manually moving items in previous titles. Additionally, it offers enhanced customization options, allowing players to manipulate elements like windows and ceiling fixtures that were previously fixed. Players can also design custom patterns and wallpapers and adjust minor sound effects. Eventually, the game expands to include exterior house customization and simplistic landscape gardening, though these elements are less developed than the interior design aspect. A notable characteristic of Happy Home Designer is the absence of a conventional grading system or points for success. As long as the player incorporates the required furniture, clients express satisfaction, regardless of the overall design quality. Completing assignments typically unlocks new furniture items, some of which are exclusive to the game. Players can revisit and redesign clients' homes at any time. Initially, the game lacked a feature for sharing designs, but a day-one patch introduced the Happy Home Network, enabling players to upload their creations for others to critique. This patch also added specific challenges, though they remain a minor component of the game experience. Unlike mainline Animal Crossing titles, players cannot explore a town or engage in activities such as digging for fossils, catching insects, fishing, or planting flowers. The player's own house is never shown, and interaction is primarily menu-driven, focusing on client selection. A small, underdeveloped shopping area adjacent to Nook's Homes can be revitalized, but it offers limited engagement. The game also incorporates amiibo card functionality. Purchasing packs of Happy Home Designer amiibo cards, priced at £5 each and containing three random cards, allows players to summon specific animals. One card in each pack is a special character, like the carpet seller Saharah, who provides unique items, offers a house to design, and can be invited to other characters' homes or shops once those facilities are opened. Despite its intentional limitations and simplified premise, the game maintains a charming and relaxing quality. The intuitive design tools, particularly the new interface, make designing rooms an engaging activity. The overall presentation is consistent with the Animal Crossing series' winsome aesthetic, contributing to a laid-back experience with minimal rules. However, the game's narrow scope and high price point of £34.99 are noted as drawbacks, especially when considering that much of its content reuses assets from previous Animal Crossing games. Ultimately, Happy Home Designer is described as a remix rather than a true sequel, achieving its distinct gameplay by removing elements from the original series rather than substantially adding new ones, which might leave some players wanting more depth and variety from a full-priced title. #AnimalCrossing #Nintendo3DS #VideoGameReview #HomeDesignGame #InteriorDesign #Gaming #NintendoEAD #AnimalCrossing #Nintendo3DS #VideoGameReview #HomeDesignGame #InteriorDesign #Gaming #NintendoEAD
