A Nancy Meyers-Approved Furniture Designer Is Making Waves in Brooklyn
Katy Skelton, a Brooklyn-based furniture designer, launched her eponymous collection two years ago and is rapidly expanding her brand to include a wider range of lifestyle products. Initially starting with six furniture designs in 2013, her collection has since grown to encompass 20 pieces, now including throw blankets, tabletop accessories, and vintage rugs. This month marks the introduction of new items such as a marble mirror, throw pillows, upholstered furniture, and acrylic-topped concrete canisters, showcasing her continuous innovation and growth in the design industry.
Skelton's design philosophy is encapsulated in the term "Modern + Nostalgic." Her creations are characterized by a contemporary feel yet are deeply rooted in heritage, featuring a subtle mid-century modern aesthetic. A key tenet of her brand is a commitment to producing pieces that are not only aesthetically pleasing and affordable but also responsibly made in America. Skelton emphasizes that while many companies might achieve two out of these three goals, her dedication extends to all three aspects, a principle she developed during her master's degree in furniture design from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
The designer has quickly garnered attention, including an endorsement from film director Nancy Meyers, known for her iconic movie sets. Meyers featured Skelton's Wythe media cabinet in her recent film, _The Intern_, marking a significant big-screen debut for Skelton's work. This inclusion highlights the growing recognition and appeal of Skelton's designs within influential circles.
Looking ahead, Skelton's brand is set to introduce fabrics-by-the-yard and lighting options in the upcoming spring season, further broadening her product offerings and solidifying her position as a comprehensive lifestyle brand. Her journey from a limited collection to a diverse range of home goods, coupled with high-profile recognition, indicates her trajectory as a significant emerging talent in the design world.
