This Cambridge kitchen design draws inspiration from the 1970s

This blog post details the design of a Cambridge kitchen that draws inspiration from 1970s architecture, blending it with midcentury and Scandinavian design elements. Louise Goff, principal of Louise M. Smith Design, led the project for a creative couple with two children, aiming for a modern, natural, and unpretentious aesthetic. The design process began with the selection of a dark color palette, specifically Benjamin Moore’s Stonecutter (an off-black), for the cabinetry, which was crafted by Walter Lane Cabinet Makers. This choice was paired with black soapstone countertops, creating a tone-on-tone effect that set the foundation for the entire kitchen's look. A key feature of the kitchen is the backsplash, composed of handmade tiles from Heath Ceramics. Despite their crisp, dark grout lines, these tiles possess a natural and warm feel due to their imperfect edges and visible clay, which prevents the graphic pattern from becoming too stark. The architectural design also incorporates plywood shelving with exposed edges, chosen for its utilitarian appearance rather than a reclaimed wood aesthetic. This choice aligns with the clients' preference for a design that is 'more rough than refined' and avoids anything 'bling-y.' The flooring consists of white oak floorboards, contributing to the natural vibe with their knotty character. The kitchen's design also emphasizes seamless integration of appliances and clever concealment of the wood hood. Goff noted that a wood enclosure for the hood is more practical for mechanical access than a plaster one. A new window was strategically added to bring in ample natural light and views of greenery, forming an asymmetric yet balanced composition and providing a logical endpoint for the backsplash without making the space feel too busy. This connection to the outdoors was a crucial design decision for the clients. Functionality and comfort are also central to the kitchen's design. A built-in bench serves as a designated area for lounging and reading, acknowledging the kitchen's role as a primary gathering spot that opens to a side garden. Cedar & Moss sconces provide additional lighting, while storage solutions are integrated for practicality. The bench is further enhanced with throw pillows, including one from Abroad Modern in Cambridge, which introduce color, texture, and an inviting element to the space. Overall, the kitchen embodies a unique blend of 1970s experimental design, midcentury influences, and Scandinavian simplicity, resulting in a contemporary yet comfortable family space. #KitchenDesign #InteriorDesign #CambridgeMA #1970sArchitecture #MidcenturyModern #ScandinavianDesign #HomeDecor #LouiseMSmithDesign #SoapstoneCountertops #KitchenDesign #InteriorDesign #CambridgeMA #1970sArchitecture #MidcenturyModern #ScandinavianDesign #HomeDecor #LouiseMSmithDesign #SoapstoneCountertops
