Reader project: A Hamptons-style dining table makeover
This article details a DIY project undertaken by Ash Rose, a Melbourne resident, who transformed a preloved dining table and chairs into a Hamptons-style set. Recognizing the high cost of new dining room furniture, Ash sourced a suitable eight-seater dining set from Facebook Marketplace for a total of $120. Her objective was to achieve a Hamptons and coastal aesthetic, characterized by light rooms and calming color accents, a style she had long admired.
The makeover process began with the crucial step of sanding the tabletop to achieve an even surface. Ash highlights this as the most challenging part of the project, not only due to the effort involved in sanding but also the extensive cleanup required afterward, particularly as she performed the task indoors without prior awareness of the mess it would create. She advises future DIY enthusiasts to conduct sanding activities outdoors to avoid similar challenges.
Following the sanding, the legs of the table were detached. Ash then proceeded to paint the table legs, the beams underneath the tabletop, and the chairs using Rustoleum Chalked Ultra Matt Paint in Linen White, applied with a roller. The decision to use chalk paint eliminated the need for additional sanding on these parts of the furniture, as chalk paint is known for its good adhesion. To ensure durability and a polished finish, a layer of Cabot’s Cabothane Clear Varnish was applied over all painted surfaces.
The total cost of the project was approximately $190, which included $40 for the dining table, $80 for the chairs, and an estimated $70 for the paint and varnish, plus a $10 roller from Bunnings. Ash expressed particular satisfaction with the final wood color, which precisely matched her vision for the Hamptons style. This project demonstrates how secondhand furniture can be affordably transformed to fit a desired home aesthetic through DIY efforts.
