Craftsmanship: An exquisite collection of wallpapers dipped in history

The article delves into de Gournay’s latest collection of wallpapers and textiles, titled "Salon Privé," which was created in collaboration with Italian-born, Chicago-based designer Alessandra Branca. This collection showcases intricate hand-painted and hand-embroidered designs, drawing inspiration from the imperial court of Catherine the Great. The creation process for these exquisite wallpapers is highly labor-intensive, with a single square meter requiring approximately 350 hours to complete. This highlights the dedication to traditional craftsmanship and meticulous detail that defines the collection. The genesis of "Salon Privé" involved extensive research into Russian and European history by both Branca and de Gournay. The collection uniquely blends Byzantine and Western European influences, utilizing ancient Chinese painting and embroidery techniques. A significant aspect of this collection is its production in South India, where de Gournay is establishing a new manufacturing facility and has assembled a specialized team to execute these detailed works. This strategic location underscores a global approach to sourcing and leveraging specialized artisan skills. The collection was first showcased at de Gournay’s redesigned Paris apartment, which Branca reimagined to feature two adjoining salons. These spaces are designed to evoke the ambiance of Catherine the Great’s 18th-century court. The first salon, named "Winter Garden," presents wallpaper made from parchment-colored tea paper, adorned with hand-painted and hand-embroidered floral motifs in blues, browns, and creamy whites. This salon offers a sense of serene elegance and natural beauty. In contrast, the second salon, "Catherine," is characterized by a vibrant palette of cerulean, rouge, and gold. A notable piece from this salon is the ‘Flora’ wallcovering, which directly references the decor of the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, near Saint Petersburg. This wallcovering is crafted from a cream wool sateen basecloth, meticulously hand-embroidered with peonies and tulips using blue silk thread, further enhanced with appliquéd red silk and gold metallic thread. The intricate layering of materials and techniques creates a rich, opulent visual experience. Beyond the wallcoverings, the collection includes other custom pieces designed by Branca, such as a bespoke gilded stone fireplace created in collaboration with Jamb, and the ‘Faux Bois’ upholstery, which is also hand-embroidered by de Gournay. These elements collectively contribute to a cohesive and luxurious interior design scheme that reflects the grandeur and artistic patronage of Catherine the Great's era. Catherine the Great is remembered for ushering in Russia’s age of enlightenment, a period that celebrated advancements in science, arts, and craftsmanship. Through the "Salon Privé" collection, de Gournay, with its ateliers in India and China, continues this legacy by creating handmade luxury interiors. The brand effectively merges time-honored techniques with a modern vision, demonstrating a commitment to preserving and evolving traditional artistry in contemporary design. #WallpaperCollection #HandcraftedInteriors #LuxuryDesign #CatherineTheGreat #DeGournay #AlessandraBranca #IndianCraftsmanship #HistoricInspiration #TextileArt #WallpaperCollection #HandcraftedInteriors #LuxuryDesign #CatherineTheGreat #DeGournay #AlessandraBranca #IndianCraftsmanship #HistoricInspiration #TextileArt
