Portals Collection furniture takes cues from Irish portal tombs

The Portals Collection, designed by New York-based Studio Bucky, is a furniture line that draws inspiration from Ireland's ancient megalithic tombs, specifically Irish portal tombs. These ancient structures, often consisting of large upright rocks supporting a capstone, fascinated studio founder Alexander Buckeridge during his upbringing in rural Ireland. He observed that these tombs served as more than just burial sites; they were places of ritual, storytelling, and connection for ancient communities. This deep historical and cultural context forms the foundational concept for the collection. The collection, set to debut at ICFF in New York, comprises five distinct pieces: a table, stools, chairs, and a mirror. All items are crafted from reclaimed maple wood, chosen for its sustainability and aesthetic versatility. A distinctive feature of the collection is the application of a blue stain, giving the wooden pieces an appearance reminiscent of large, ancient rock slabs. This choice of material and finish aims to bridge the gap between natural, raw forms and refined, functional design. The use of reclaimed wood also highlights the studio's commitment to sustainable practices, with any leftover materials being repurposed to minimize waste. Each piece in the Portals Collection is characterized by its irregular shapes, contrasting textures, and smooth surfaces. Buckeridge's design philosophy involved a juxtaposition of rough-hewn textures, which echo the rawness of ancient stone, with modern fabrication techniques to create functional sculptures. This approach ensures that while the furniture evokes a sense of ancient history, it remains practical and interactive for contemporary use. For instance, elements are intentionally stacked, offset, or slid to introduce a sense of movement and tension, adding dynamic qualities to the static forms. Subtle metal accents are integrated into some of the designs, such as the keyhole on the Portals Mirror. These metallic details are not merely decorative; they reinforce the overarching theme of passage and transition, transforming everyday objects into symbolic thresholds. According to Buckeridge, these elements invite users to connect with different spaces, memories, and interpretations, imbuing the furniture with a narrative depth beyond its utilitarian function. The entire collection was produced in New York City, maintaining a local and artisanal approach to manufacturing. Studio Bucky's Portals Collection distinguishes itself by blending historical inspiration with contemporary design and sustainable manufacturing. The furniture pieces are not just functional items but serve as sculptural elements that tell a story of ancient rituals and connections, reinterpreted through modern craftsmanship and material consciousness. The exhibition at ICFF will mark a significant milestone for the studio, presenting a unique fusion of cultural heritage, artistic vision, and environmental responsibility in furniture design. #FurnitureDesign #MegalithicTombs #IrishHeritage #ReclaimedWood #SustainableDesign #ICFF #StudioBucky #SculpturalFurniture #MapleWood #DesignExhibition #FurnitureDesign #MegalithicTombs #IrishHeritage #ReclaimedWood #SustainableDesign #ICFF #StudioBucky #SculpturalFurniture #MapleWood #DesignExhibition
