Before & After: Vintage Tile Rules In This Remodeled Fisherman’s Flat in Spain

David and Monica embarked on a renovation project for their first-floor flat in Valencia, Spain, situated in the historic seaside neighborhood of El Cabanyal. This area is renowned for its traditional fisherman's houses, often characterized by vibrant tiled facades. The couple, with Monica originally from Madrid and David from Valencia, had been searching for a property in the city for some time, seeking a home by the sea. They ultimately purchased a 1927 fisherman's home in December 2021. Upon their initial viewing, the flat presented a kaleidoscope of tiles, with different colors and patterns adorning each room—green and black in the hallway, pink in a bedroom, and a rust-mint check in the living room. Monica initially found the abundance of patterns overwhelming, but the couple ultimately decided to embrace and integrate the existing vintage tilework into their design. Their primary goal was to preserve as much of the home's historic character as possible, consciously avoiding a complete gut renovation that is often seen in such properties. Valencia's El Cabanyal neighborhood holds particular significance for David, not only for its proximity to the beach but also for its unique architectural heritage. He notes that while much of the Spanish Mediterranean coast has undergone extensive redevelopment since the 1960s and 70s, El Cabanyal has largely remained untouched. The neighborhood's traditional houses, however, faced threats due to political disagreements and speculative interests in recent years. A significant development in 2023 was the approval of a city plan, the "Plan Especial del Cabanyal-Canyamelar," which aims to protect the essential character of the area, offering renewed hope for its preservation. In their renovation, David and Monica made a concerted effort to retain original elements. They preserved the old wood doors throughout the flat and maintained the tile wainscot on most walls. Even during demolition, care was taken to salvage existing tiles, which were later reused to repair openings around new door frames. This approach allowed them to modernize the living space while honoring the building's historical integrity and the distinct aesthetic of El Cabanyal. #VintageTile #HomeRemodel #SpanishArchitecture #ElCabanyal #HistoricPreservation #InteriorDesign #Valencia #BeforeAndAfter #FishermansFlat #VintageTile #HomeRemodel #SpanishArchitecture #ElCabanyal #HistoricPreservation #InteriorDesign #Valencia #BeforeAndAfter #FishermansFlat
