Your Family Decorator: It's time to rethink that obsolete armoire; here are some creative new uses

The article addresses the obsolescence of the traditional armoire in modern homes and proposes several creative repurposing ideas for this once-ubiquitous furniture piece. Historically, armoires served as primary storage for clothing in rooms without closets. By the 1980s, their function evolved to house home-entertainment systems, often with interiors upholstered in designer fabrics. However, with the advent of large, wall-mounted televisions and expansive walk-in closets in contemporary homes, the armoire has largely lost its practical purpose, frequently ending up in storage or being discarded. Carleton Varney, president of Dorothy Draper & Co. and a renowned designer, emphasizes the potential for these pieces to be given new life through innovative adaptation. One suggestion is to repurpose armoire doors as a distinctive headboard for a bed, particularly for queen-sized beds, with taller doors potentially reaching the ceiling. He notes examples from hotel rooms that utilize such designs, moving beyond conventional tufted upholstered headboards. Another creative use involves transforming an armoire, without its doors, into a functional bookcase. This is particularly suitable for spaces where built-in shelves are not an option, such as a child's bedroom. The internal shelves may need adjustment or replacement to accommodate various book sizes, and painting the frame and interior in vibrant colors like red or yellow can add a personalized touch. Varney also recounts seeing single-door armoires laid on their backs and topped with clear glass to serve as unique coffee tables, often painted white with gold-leafed molding. Further ideas include converting an armoire into a stylish drinks cabinet. With the assistance of a skilled carpenter, an armoire can also be modified and reduced in height to function as a sideboard, again benefiting from a glass top. While acknowledging that armoires will not revert to their original role for clothing storage due to modern closet designs, the article celebrates the ingenuity of those who find ways to salvage and repurpose these elegant pieces of furniture. Giving old furniture new life not only serves a practical purpose but also creates unique conversation starters in a home, reflecting a commitment to sustainable design and personal style. #CarletonVarney #HomeDecor #FurnitureRepurposing #Armoire #InteriorDesign #DIYHome #SustainableDesign #VintageFurniture #CarletonVarney #HomeDecor #FurnitureRepurposing #Armoire #InteriorDesign #DIYHome #SustainableDesign #VintageFurniture
