Bamboo is another eco-conscious option, often being harder than many traditional hardwoods. The appealing aspects of butcher block include its natural aesthetic, affordability compared to stone, versatility in various kitchen styles, and its gentle nature on dishes, reducing chipping. Additionally, butcher block can be easily refinished through sanding, restoring its appearance from scratches or wear.
Proper care for butcher block includes daily cleaning with mild soap and water and regular sealing with food-safe mineral oil. It is crucial to use mineral oil instead of food oils like coconut or vegetable oils, as the latter can turn rancid and foster bacterial growth. The use of cutting boards is recommended to prevent scratches. If the surface shows significant wear, sanding and refinishing can restore it. Material costs for butcher block range from approximately $35 to $200 per square foot, depending on the wood type and grain style, making it a competitive option when compared to solid surface ($75 to $150) and granite ($100 to $250). Edge grain is generally the least expensive, while end grain is the most. Bamboo is typically the most affordable material, followed by maple, red oak, cherry, and walnut, with exotic hardwoods like teak commanding higher prices. Thickness also contributes to the overall cost.
