Want a Tidier Closet? Try This 15-Minute Reset Organizing Experts Swear By

Maintaining a tidy home, particularly a closet, can be challenging. Professional organizers Hillary Forst and Jamie Andrieu, co-founders of Sorted & Styled, emphasize that closet maintenance focuses on consistent attention rather than unattainable perfection. They suggest that daily small efforts, coupled with a weekly reset, can significantly reduce stress related to closet organization throughout the year. Forst and Andrieu advocate for a routine called "Sort It Out Sunday," a 15-minute weekly reset designed to keep closets in order. This involves returning misplaced laundry to its designated spot, rehanging items that require proper hanging, and assessing existing organizational systems. For instance, if a shoe rack is consistently overflowing, it might indicate a need for a shoe collection edit. The process concludes with a final glance to identify and adjust anything that appears out of place or unnecessary. Even for individuals with extremely busy schedules, Angela York, vice president at St. Louis Closet Co., suggests that a five-minute mini-reset on Sundays can be highly effective. This mini-reset includes rehanging and folding items that have strayed from their designated places and realigning any shoes. Beyond the weekly reset, several other strategies contribute to sustained closet organization. A crucial starting point is a full reset, as a system that was never effective cannot be maintained. This involves emptying the closet to inventory all possessions and decluttering items that have not been worn in a year or no longer align with one's personal style. After decluttering, items should be organized by category, starting with hanging clothes, then folded items, and finally shoes. Using matching hangers and color-coordinating clothes can streamline the morning routine. For folded items, velvet-lined drawers for lingerie and divided drawers for t-shirts, workout clothes, and jeans are recommended, ensuring everything has a dedicated place. Furthermore, organizers advise designing closet systems that reflect actual living habits rather than aspirational images seen on social media. Keeping organization simple and grouping similar items together (e.g., tops with tops, dresses with dresses) makes it more practical to maintain. Incorporating a designated basket within the closet for items needing repairs, dry cleaning, or donation prevents clutter from accumulating. For those with limited floor space, a canvas bag hung on a hanger can serve this purpose. Establishing the habit of immediately returning items to their proper places after use is also key. This means rehanging or putting away clothes and shoes right after changing, ensuring shoes are paired, dresses are zipped, shirts are buttoned, and accessories are tucked away. Only clean clothing should be kept in the closet; laundry should consistently go into a hamper. If persistent organizational challenges arise despite these efforts, considering a custom closet system might be beneficial. While a full renovation might be a significant investment, adding simple elements like an extra closet bar, shelves, a shoe rack, or a fresh set of matching hangers can still make a substantial difference. The overarching principle is consistency, not perfection, in maintaining an organized closet. #ClosetOrganization #HomeOrganizing #WeeklyReset #Decluttering #TidyCloset #OrganizationalTips #HomeImprovement #CustomCloset #MarieKondoMethod #ClosetOrganization #HomeOrganizing #WeeklyReset #Decluttering #TidyCloset #OrganizationalTips #HomeImprovement #CustomCloset #MarieKondoMethod
