Traditional and True with Designer Meg Braff
Meg Braff, an interior designer with roots in Tupelo, Mississippi, and homes in West Palm Beach and Locust Valley, New York, brings a playful glamour and cheerful traditional aesthetic to both her interior design work and her approach to entertaining. Her design philosophy, which embraces vibrant colors and traditional silhouettes with a contemporary twist, draws clients from diverse locations and influences her personal style, often seen in her preference for bright, '60s-inspired kaftans.
Braff's skill as a hostess, honed from an early age by observing her mother and grandmother, is evident in her elaborate dinner parties. She prides herself on owning all necessary entertaining pieces, accommodating up to 24 guests in Palm Beach and 40 up north without relying on rentals. To keep each event unique, she frequently introduces new tablecloths, often utilizing textiles from her own line. These fabrics feature custom colors and patterns, including adaptations from historical archives like those of New York wallpaper designer Philip Graf, whose collection she acquired. She also incorporates inherited china, showcasing a large collection of napkins, chargers, and plates.
Her themed parties are meticulously planned, often starting with the menu and guest list to inform the table settings and signature cocktails. For instance, a surprise birthday for her mother-in-law, inspired by chinoiserie, was held at Newport's Marble House and featured custom "Forbidden City" fabric tablecloths and orchid arrangements, with a pagoda-shaped cake. For her husband's Cuban-themed birthday during the pandemic, Havana-inspired "Southwind" print tablecloths were extended to custom aprons and masks for waiters, demonstrating her attention to detail even amidst unexpected elements like a summer rainstorm.
Braff often finds inspiration at wholesale flower markets, allowing available blooms to guide her color schemes. During a recent springtime celebration at her Mediterranean Revival home overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, she used a discontinued "Benedicte" Clarence House fabric for the tablecloth. Chargers and glasses echoed the botanical print's chartreuse, while bamboo accents adorned plates and flatware. Leontine Linens napkins, embroidered with lemon trees, tied into the tablecloth's yellow and blue tones. The long, narrow table, designed for intimate conversation, was adorned with bouquets of yellow tulips and lavender sweet peas. The menu for this event included cheese soufflé, filet with green peppercorn sauce, and flourless chocolate cake.
Her home, acquired in 2020, reflects her design vision, featuring saturated jade greens, peachy pinks, and robin's-egg blues, complemented by vintage brass fixtures and smoked-glass mirrors. Her own fabrics and wall coverings are displayed alongside antiques and artwork from her Georgia Avenue store, which opened in 2022. Braff considers green a neutral, integrating it seamlessly into her decor and coordinating it with her garden. Palm Beach's outdoor-centric lifestyle and vibrant aesthetic have significantly influenced her work and personal style, including collaborations such as a recent towel collection with Weezie and a limited-edition fashion line with designer Sue Sartor. Braff's overarching advice for successful entertaining emphasizes having fun and being resourceful, even if it means sourcing food rather than cooking it herself.
She shares practical tips for hostesses, including mixing casual and formal elements, preparing as much as possible in advance, strategically seating guests, adjusting lighting, and considering back-to-back parties to maximize efforts. Conversely, she advises against using the same plate for every place setting (suggesting alternating sets), overdoing mixed patterns, using short hurricane glasses for candles, and running out of food or wine. Her philosophy centers on creating memorable, stylish, and enjoyable gatherings through thoughtful design and a relaxed attitude.
