Tour a moody Victorian kitchen with a unique wall design
This article highlights a recent kitchen renovation project by deVOL Kitchens in a Victorian property in Blackheath, London. The project aimed to transform a cold, contemporary kitchen into a space that honored the home's 1870s heritage while meeting modern-day needs. The key focal point and most unique design element is a hand-painted, mottled wall effect that gives the illusion of age and patina.
The renovation involved expanding the kitchen's footprint by building a large side extension and creating an opening between the kitchen and a new pantry area. This significantly increased the usable space and allowed for a more functional layout. One notable challenge during the remodel was the discovery of a partial wall behind the original cabinets. Fortunately, the clients were flexible, allowing for modifications to ensure the range cooker and cabinetry could sit flush with the back wall without requiring bespoke-shaped carcasses.
The design team successfully balanced the property's original features with a rich, moody color palette. A decorative artist was commissioned to paint and distress the walls, replicating an aged, mottled look inspired by a small patch of old paint found during demolition. This hand-painted effect utilizes shades of yellow, green, and brown, with hints of cream to create balance and a perfectly imperfect distressed finish. This unique wall treatment serves as a stand-out feature and sets the overall tone for the kitchen.
Dark green kitchen cabinets, painted in 'Bakehouse Green,' were chosen to complement the earthy tones of the walls, creating a warm, moody, and atmospheric space. A significant change involved integrating most appliances, such as the fridge, freezer, dishwasher, and extractor fan, behind the cabinetry to maintain a seamless look. However, the range cooker was intentionally left freestanding to serve as a focal point.
Freestanding furniture was also incorporated into the design, exemplified by deVOL's Heirloom Dairy Table used as a kitchen island. This antique-inspired piece provides functional prep space and, with its hand-turned legs and dark stained oak against a light Carrara marble countertop, offers an interesting contrast to the fitted cabinetry. The aged copper countertops are another highlight, featuring a bespoke copper sink and dimple draining board welded into a single seamless piece. A tall copper kitchen backsplash behind the range cooker, complete with a pot filler and brass rail, reflects light and adds a touch of luxury. The kitchen also maximizes vertical space with countertop cabinets that utilize the tall ceilings, providing ample storage. The intricate beading and vertical styles of the cabinet doors were chosen to suit the Victorian proportions of the room. The overall design carefully integrates subtle decorative elements, such as brass candlesticks, to enhance the aged, historical feel without appearing dated.
