Tom Dixon’s bathroom designs for VitrA named Best Fluid Forms
Tom Dixon's ‘Liquid’ bathroom collection, developed for the Turkish brand VitrA, has been recognized with a Wallpaper* Design Award 2022 for 'Best Fluid Forms.' This collection marks Dixon's inaugural venture into bathroom design, drawing inspiration from the enduring aesthetics of Victorian-era bathrooms. Dixon expressed his admiration for the permanence evident in Victorian designs, characterized by their robust taps and plumbing, an aesthetic deeply rooted in British engineering traditions that significantly influenced bathroom evolution.
The ‘Liquid’ collection translates Dixon’s signature bold design philosophy into a functional and comprehensive range of bathroom essentials. It includes various components such as sinks, showerheads, taps, WCs, mirrors, and hooks, alongside furniture pieces like stools and cabinets, and a selection of textured tiles. This collection exemplifies VitrA’s commitment to collaborative design, extending its product offerings beyond conventional bathroom fixtures.
A defining characteristic of the ‘Liquid’ collection is its use of soft-edged, rounded forms. These shapes subtly reference the sculptural works of artists such as Jeff Koons, Claes Oldenburg, and Barbara Hepworth, creating a harmonious blend of gentle geometries and striking, reflective silhouettes. Dixon has thoughtfully infused even everyday bathroom items, like toilet roll holders and urinals, with a distinct design identity and a touch of playful aesthetic.
Each piece within the collection was designed with individual consideration, ensuring that they can either integrate cohesively as a complete bathroom suite or stand alone as distinctive design elements. The collaboration with VitrA’s Innovation Centre was instrumental in pushing the boundaries of manufacturing and creative design within the bathroom sector. Echoing Dixon’s previous 2021 collections, which explored single materials like brass, cork, and glass, the ‘Liquid’ collection emphasizes materiality, focusing on the transformative qualities of ceramics.
Dixon articulated his fascination with the process by which raw, earthy clay can be transformed into pristine, lustrous ceramic objects. He describes the ‘Liquid’ collection as embodying ‘expressive minimalism,’ a unique approach to bathroom design. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the collection’s design also enhances functionality; for instance, its rounded edges improve safety, and its smooth surfaces facilitate easy cleaning. The range incorporates thoughtful design details, such as a magnetic attachment for the hand-held showerhead, illustrating that ‘Liquid’ is more than just a stylistic exercise. Dixon aimed for the collection to evoke the simplicity of a child's drawing of a bathroom basin or tap, thereby achieving a clear and intuitive logic in both its appearance and practical application.
