The Only Design Rule for This L.A. Home: Stick to Pink and Green

This article details the design process and outcome of a 3,000-square-foot Los Angeles home renovation by Lizzie Green of Popix Designs, commissioned by Chris and Sachiko Northman. The couple's primary request was to infuse their home with a Palm Springs aesthetic, which they interpreted as a strict adherence to a pink and green color palette. Unlike typical clients who might prioritize neutral tones for resale value, the Northmans embraced bold colors, intending to raise their two children in the home. This creative freedom allowed Green to develop a design plan in two months and complete the renovation in under a year. The design strategy revolved around making the pink and green color combination feel consistently fresh and avoid monotony across the entire house, which includes six unique bathrooms and a whimsical kitchen. A key technique employed was varying the format of tiles. Although only six different tile types were used throughout the home, Green manipulated their sizing to create distinct looks in each space. For example, the kitchen backsplash features 4x4-inch pink zellige tiles, while a nearby built-in peninsula uses smaller 2x2-inch versions. The adjacent laundry room maintains cohesion by using the same backsplash tiles but introduces Farrow & Ball’s Breakfast Room Green on the cabinets. In a half-bath near the pool, glossy pink squares on the floor transition to soothing sage along the baseboards, wall, and countertop, with an exaggerated grout line and staggered layout to differentiate it from the kitchen. Pattern play was another crucial element, heavily influenced by the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel, a source of inspiration for Sachiko. One guest bathroom features a re-creation of the hotel's striped entrance on the floor using green and alabaster white subway tiles. The main powder room showcases a vibrant banana leaf wallpaper by Chelsea Lane, a flashier take on the classic Dorothy Draper print, chosen due to the Northmans' desire for bold choices. To introduce softness and counteract straight lines, Green incorporated curves throughout the design, using bulbous sconces and circular mirrors. Mesh-backed mosaics were a practical choice for covering curved surfaces like the kitchen island, a mossy arch in the kids' bath, and a rounded shower in the primary suite, simplifying installation on uneven areas. The designer also avoided over-tiling every space. In some bathrooms, tile was only partially extended up the wall, allowing other elements, such as a mint bucket sink, to become focal points. In the kids’ bathroom, serving both a one-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter, half the wall and door trim were painted pink, with a smaller green accent around the tub and in the youngest’s room. Natural neutrals were strategically integrated to balance the vibrant pink and green. The kitchen features oak cabinetry and a fluted range hood, paired with white counters, to break up the glossy pinks. Stained-glass drawers in the open shelving section, inspired by the Northmans' glass tumblers, served as an alternative to a traditional backsplash. Oak and quartzite vanities are present in the main powder room, primary bathroom, and dressing room. In the primary bathroom, white KitKat tile was used, complemented by gray terrazzo floors, a choice made by Chris Northman, who preferred the authenticity of the composite material to a trendy pink and green checkerboard pattern. Green concludes by advising homeowners to prioritize their own preferences when designing their living spaces, rather than being swayed by resale value trends, emphasizing that unique designs will always find appreciation. #HomeDesign #ColorPalette #PinkAndGreen #LosAngelesHome #InteriorRenovation #TileDesign #PalmSpringsStyle #BoldInteriors #ResidentialDesign #HomeDesign #ColorPalette #PinkAndGreen #LosAngelesHome #InteriorRenovation #TileDesign #PalmSpringsStyle #BoldInteriors #ResidentialDesign
