The 7 Best Blackout Curtains, According to Testing

The selection of blackout curtains for a room significantly impacts sleep quality, room temperature, and privacy. The wide array of options in colors, price ranges, sizes, designs, and brands can be overwhelming. To navigate these choices, considering the number of panels required and whether thermal properties are needed is crucial. This review tested 11 blackout curtain models over six months, evaluating their effectiveness, ease of setup, and overall design, with insights from architect Leslie Saul, founder of The Drape Angela Boswell, and interior designer Jennifer Stephan. Among the tested curtains, the Better Homes & Gardens Solid Woven Textured Grommet Blackout Curtain Panel emerged as the best overall. It excelled in all categories, demonstrating high effectiveness in light blocking, particularly against a street lamp, and featured a soft yet flexible polyester and rayon blend fabric that draped beautifully. Installation was simple due to its metal grommet top and included rod, though panels are sold individually. While color options are limited to solid neutrals, its quality and performance remained consistent after six months, blocking all bedroom light. For thermal insulation, the Nicetown Thermal Blackout Curtains were highly rated. These curtains not only blocked a significant amount of light but also effectively kept the room cooler. Available in over 30 colors, with darker shades recommended for maximum light blockage, these machine-washable curtains are lightweight, soft, and easy to maneuver, maintaining their appearance even after washing. After six months, they continued to cool the room, proving effective enough to eliminate the need for a sleep mask, despite a lighter color not achieving 100% blackout. The Pottery Barn Custom Belgian Flax Linen Blackout Curtains were recognized for their extensive customization options, offering over 20 width and 150 length choices, making them suitable for non-typical window dimensions. Made from 100% Belgian flax linen with a polyester backing, they provided a flexible, high-quality fabric and elegant drape. While stylish and easy to operate, they were found to block approximately 70% of sunlight, making them more of a light-filtering option than a complete blackout solution. Their quality remained consistent over two years. The Amazon Basics Travel Window Blackout Curtain was highlighted as the best portable option, ideal for nurseries or travel due to its heavy-duty light-blocking polyester material and suction cup installation. These curtains effectively blocked about 90% of light, crucial for daytime naps or early morning sleep. Although stiff and less stylish, their portability and effectiveness for specific needs were highly valued, and their suction cups retained adhesion after months of daily use. The Better Homes & Gardens Modern Leaves Rod Pocket Blackout Single Curtain Panel was praised for its stylish patterned design and effectiveness. Made from a polyester and linen blend, these curtains blocked around 90% of light and notably muffled outside noises. While slightly rough and stiff, requiring some effort to slide, their aesthetic appeal and noise-reducing properties were significant. Their quality and light-blocking capability remained strong after six months, ensuring a dark and cool bedroom. The Nicetown 100% Blackout Window Curtain Panels were noted for having the best size options, with 30 colors and 34 sizes available. These polyester blend curtains effectively blocked most light, though some light leakage occurred at the top where they were away from the wall. They are heavy and require two hands to open, and while not the most stylish, they are highly functional and well-priced, making them suitable for guest rooms or dorms. Their quality endured through a room change and continued to block various light sources. Finally, the Sun Zero Oslo Theater Grade Extreme Total Blackout curtains provided a 100% blackout effect, with no light filtering through when closed. These polyester curtains, sold individually, have a silky texture and effectively maintained a comfortable room temperature even on hot days. They proved durable and colorfast after multiple washes, with no fading or changes in quality. Key considerations for shopping include measuring windows accurately to determine the appropriate size, understanding material differences (e.g., foamback vs. woven blackout), deciding on the number of panels for desired light blockage, and correctly mounting the curtain rod for optimal performance. Blackout curtains vary in cost and can last many years with proper care, which typically involves regular cleaning according to manufacturer instructions and avoiding harsh chemicals or excessive sun exposure to prevent degradation. #BlackoutCurtains #HomeDecor #WindowTreatments #InteriorDesign #HomeImprovement #SleepQuality #EnergyEfficiency #ProductReview #TextileTechnology #BlackoutCurtains #HomeDecor #WindowTreatments #InteriorDesign #HomeImprovement #SleepQuality #EnergyEfficiency #ProductReview #TextileTechnology
