Best Blackout Curtains of 2024
The article focuses on the importance of blackout curtains for improving sleep quality and health, presenting findings from tests conducted by Consumer Reports on 18 curtains from nine popular brands. Research indicates that even dim to moderate levels of light can negatively impact sleep and overall health. As a result, blackout curtains, once primarily found in hotels, have gained popularity for home use. A 2022 Consumer Reports survey revealed that blackout curtains or shades were the third most common item purchased to improve sleep, following bedding and air conditioners or fans.
Despite the increasing demand and availability of blackout curtains, the market is rife with products that fail to deliver on their promise of creating a truly dark room. The Consumer Reports testing process involved evaluating the light-blocking capabilities of both light and dark-colored curtains from brands like Amazon Basics, BGment, Gracie Oaks Olivia Signature, Ikea, Lemomo, Mainstays (Walmart), Nicetown (now TheHues), Pottery Barn, and Threshold (Target). Testers used a bright flashlight to measure how much light penetrated the curtain material. The results showed that darker curtains generally blocked more light, but surprisingly, many products marketed as "blackout" curtains allowed a significant amount of light to pass through. Only two of the nine tested brands were fully recommended for their effective light blockage across all color options.
In addition to light blocking, the thermal insulation properties of each curtain were also assessed. Testers measured the amount of heat required to maintain a constant temperature in a metal box covered by the curtains, with lower heat requirements indicating better insulation. The overall score for each brand heavily prioritized light-blocking performance, with insulation capacity as a secondary factor. The study highlighted that the effectiveness of a blackout curtain is influenced by various factors, including the yarn used and the weave pattern, making it challenging to judge performance solely based on appearance.
Blackout curtains are particularly beneficial for individuals whose sleep is disrupted by external light sources such as streetlights or traffic, or for shift workers. The 2022 survey confirmed that 88% of users found them somewhat or very effective. Experts emphasize that darkness is crucial for regulating melatonin production, a hormone essential for sleep, and that artificial light interferes with this natural process. Complete darkness can also prevent distractions for those with insomnia and reduce sleep fragmentation. Studies suggest that even moderate light exposure during sleep can elevate heart rate and blood pressure, potentially linking to long-term health issues like diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.
While achieving pitch-black conditions is ideal, any degree of light blockage is considered better than none. For those who struggle to wake up, a curtain that allows a slight glow of natural light in the morning can be advantageous. To maximize the effectiveness of blackout curtains, it is crucial to ensure they fully cover the window, extending beyond the edges to prevent light leakage. Additionally, minimizing internal light sources, such as indicator lights on electronics and light from adjacent rooms, is important. Establishing fundamental sleep hygiene practices, such as a consistent sleep schedule, morning sunlight exposure, and avoiding screen time before bed, remains paramount for optimal sleep.
