Sustainable Countertops from an Environmentally Responsible Company
Cosentino, a leading manufacturer of engineered-stone surfaces, is committed to sustainability, integrating environmentally friendly practices into its core values for over four decades. The company continuously invests in research and development to create greener manufacturing methods for its high-end products, most notably Silestone. A significant advancement is the introduction of Silestone XM, an updated version of the material featuring Hybriq+ technology. This innovation drastically reduces the crystalline silica content to a maximum of 10 percent, addressing health and safety concerns associated with silica dust during material processing. Furthermore, Silestone XM incorporates at least 20 percent recycled materials, such as glass, effectively diverting waste from landfills and promoting a circular economy.
The development of Hybriq+ technology involved over 90,000 hours of research and development. Despite the focus on sustainability and safety, Cosentino ensures that aesthetic appeal is not compromised. The proprietary mix of minerals used in Hybriq+ results in a natural-looking luster, color, and depth. This is evident in the Le Chic Bohème collection, which showcases sophisticated, beautifully veined, and low-silica surfaces. The four patterns in this collection are designed to mimic natural stones like travertine and marble, featuring luminous colors and authentic organic veining, offering both beauty and environmental responsibility.
Cosentino's dedication to environmental stewardship extends beyond its product formulations. The company recycles 99 percent of the water used across all its manufacturing processes and maintains a zero-discharge policy to prevent wastewater from polluting rivers and other waterways. All electrical energy consumed by Cosentino is sourced from clean, renewable resources, including its own photovoltaic plant in Europe, which is one of the largest on the continent, utilizing approximately 66,000 solar panels to generate electricity. The company actively measures its carbon footprint and has reduced it by over 10 percent between 2018 and 2023, while also engaging in offset programs that support biodiversity, such as reforestation and marine ecosystem improvement.
Moreover, Cosentino fosters environmental consciousness among its employees. Its industrial park in Spain is equipped with bike lanes and free electric vehicle charging stations. The company promotes car-sharing and provides a shuttle service with hybrid vehicles for employees commuting from nearby towns, demonstrating a holistic approach to sustainability. Cosentino's overarching vision is to maximize positive impact on people while minimizing its footprint on the planet, reflecting a comprehensive commitment to environmental responsibility in both its products and operational practices.
