Shifting Fields carpet tile collection by Kerry Deffley for Shaw Contract
The "Shifting Fields" carpet tile collection, designed by Kerry Deffley for flooring brand Shaw Contract, draws inspiration from natural landscapes and their continuous transformations. This collection is specifically developed for commercial interior spaces, offering a blend of aesthetic appeal and functional performance. The design ethos behind Shifting Fields emphasizes adapting to changing environments, mirroring the dynamic relationships found in nature, such as those between land, sky, water, and the horizon. This approach aims to create more balanced and connected indoor spaces, catering to the evolving needs of modern agile working environments.
The collection comprises three distinct versions: Plains, Landing, and Landing Edge, each offering unique visual characteristics. Plains features a stippled, two-toned color effect, providing a subtle yet rich texture. Landing is available in three shades of grey, offering a versatile and sophisticated base. Landing Edge serves as a transitional element, featuring a gradient of two colors that facilitate a seamless blend between the Plains and Landing designs. This modularity allows for diverse installation patterns and design possibilities, enabling designers to create customized flooring solutions that reflect the natural inspiration of the collection.
All carpet tiles in the Shifting Fields collection are produced in a standard 50 by 50-centimetre format, making them easy to install and replace. A significant aspect of this collection is its commitment to sustainability. The tiles are manufactured from 100 percent recycled yarn, demonstrating a strong emphasis on repurposing materials and reducing waste. Furthermore, the tile backing is composed of 75 percent recycled content, further enhancing the product's environmental credentials. The manufacturing process takes place in a carbon-neutral factory located in Scotland, minimizing the carbon footprint associated with production.
Beyond material composition and manufacturing practices, the Shifting Fields collection is also certified for its indoor air quality. It holds the Indoor Air Comfort Gold certification, indicating that the products are low-emitting and contribute to healthier indoor environments by reducing the release of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This certification is particularly relevant for commercial spaces where occupant well-being and air quality are paramount. The product's lifecycle is also considered, as the tiles are designed to be recyclable at the end of their useful life, promoting a circular economy approach.
The collection is part of Shaw Contract's EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) range, catering to a broad international market. The natural color palette, inspired by elements of the earth and sky, is intended to foster a sense of calm and connection within commercial interiors. This focus on biophilic design principles aims to enhance user comfort and productivity by integrating elements of nature into the built environment. Overall, the Shifting Fields collection represents a combination of thoughtful design, environmental responsibility, and functional adaptability for contemporary commercial spaces.
