Renovating your kitchen? Here are 2022’s cabinet trends

The kitchen, often considered the heart of the home, has seen an increase in activity and renovation, especially following the pandemic. A 2022 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study indicated a significant rise in median expenditures for both major and minor kitchen remodels in mid-2021, with major remodels increasing by 14% to $40,000 and minor ones by 25% to $10,000 compared to the previous year. Cabinets represent the largest cost in kitchen updates, accounting for 29% of the overall expense, according to the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Consequently, homeowners are increasingly seeking unique cabinet designs that reflect their personality rather than standard, 'cookie-cutter' options. One of the primary decisions in kitchen design involves choosing between open shelving and closed cabinetry. Closed-door cabinets offer a tidy appearance, keeping items out of sight. In contrast, open shelves can make smaller kitchens feel more expansive, creating the illusion of greater square footage, and provide easy access to frequently used items. They also serve as display areas for cherished collections, a modern alternative to traditional china cabinets. Designers like Kate Farr suggest introducing additional textures and materials such as metal, glass, leather, or mesh into cabinet door panels or shelving materials to add a custom and unique touch to the space. While white kitchens remain a timeless choice, color is gaining prominence in cabinet trends. Two-tone cabinets, where different colors are used for upper and lower cabinets or for the main cabinets and the island, are becoming popular. This 'color blocking' technique allows for visual separation and interest. Current popular color palettes lean towards cool tones, including various shades of greens and blues, ranging from subtle to deeply saturated. Sherwin Williams' Evergreen Fog SW 9130 and Benjamin Moore's October Mist 1495, both natural neutral green hues, are anticipated to be popular choices for new and renovated kitchens, marking a shift from the prevalent grays of previous years. While grays haven't entirely disappeared, nature-inspired colors are now preferred. Bryan Sebring notes that green-tone paints, oak wood, and neutral finishes combine beautifully. For painted cabinets, factory-finished options offer superior quality and durability compared to DIY painting, which often uses less resilient lacquer finishes. Factory applications typically utilize conversion varnish, which is more resistant to wear. Unpainted wood, particularly white oak, has also seen a resurgence in popularity. White oak's ability to take stain well and its linear graining make it versatile for various design styles, from seaside to rustic or modern, distinguishing it from the previously common red oak with its different taupe color tones. Modern cabinetry designs also incorporate contemporary storage needs. With increased at-home cooking and technological integration, customized storage solutions are in demand. These include specialized features like tray dividers, spice pullouts, and deeper drawers. Many homeowners are also requesting built-in outlets within cabinets for charging phones and tablets. Maximizing storage space by extending cabinets to the ceiling is another trend, eliminating dust-collecting empty spaces above cabinets and providing additional storage, even if it requires a step stool for access. Cabinet hardware, while subject to trends like matte black and brass, is seen as an opportunity to infuse personality into the kitchen. Designers emphasize using hardware to tie in existing design elements or introduce new textures and materials. The '33% rule' suggests that hardware width should not exceed one-third of the cabinet width. Oversized hardware is preferred, and some contemporary designs feature touch-opening mechanisms, eliminating the need for hardware altogether. Finally, incorporating freestanding heirloom furniture pieces, such as antique pantries or buffets, within the cabinetry design adds a unique focal point and blends traditional elements with updated kitchen aesthetics. #KitchenRenovation #CabinetTrends #KitchenDesign #HomeRemodel #InteriorDesign #StorageSolutions #ColorTrends #KitchenHardware #KitchenRenovation #CabinetTrends #KitchenDesign #HomeRemodel #InteriorDesign #StorageSolutions #ColorTrends #KitchenHardware
