Rainwater Harvesting System Integrated With Sensors for Attic Temperature Reduction

The increasing demand for cooling and ventilation systems due to rising global temperatures, particularly in tropical regions, highlights the need for effective solutions to reduce heat transfer into buildings. This study investigates an active cool roof system designed to mitigate attic temperatures and improve occupant comfort. The system integrates a Moving-Air-Cavity (MAC) ventilation, solar-powered fans, and an innovative rainwater harvesting system controlled by smart sensors. The research involved the design and construction of four small-scale cool roof models: a conventional metal deck roof (Design W), a metal deck roof with MAC ventilation (Design X), a metal deck roof with MAC and solar-powered fans (Design Y), and a metal deck roof with MAC, solar-powered fans, and a rainwater harvesting system (Design Z). The experimental setup utilized halogen lamps to simulate solar irradiation, with ambient temperatures maintained around 29.8 °C. K-type thermocouples measured temperatures at the rooftop surface, within the MAC aluminum tube, and in the attic region. The MAC ventilation, constructed from aluminum foil and steel rods, was designed with a cubical cone shape to enhance the buoyancy effect, facilitating the upward flow and removal of hot air. Solar-powered fans, with dimensions of 4.5 cm x 4.5 cm, were strategically placed within the MAC channels to accelerate airflow and efficiently expel hot air before it could reach the attic. Key to the system's innovation is the rainwater harvesting component, which employs a submersible water pump integrated with a thermostat. This system is designed to automatically cool the rooftop when its surface temperature reaches a pre-set threshold of 60 °C. The cooling tower, another essential part of the rainwater harvesting system, reduces the temperature of the heated water returning from the rooftop. This ensures that the water circulated for cooling remains effective, maintaining a temperature of approximately 28 °C in the storage tank. The cooling tower's design incorporates acrylic sheets and honeycomb-shaped cooling fills to maximize the contact area for enhanced convective heat transfer. A solar-powered fan installed at the top of the cooling tower induces bulk air movement, further aiding in the heat dissipation process. Comparative analysis of the four roof designs revealed significant findings. Design W, the conventional metal deck roof, exhibited the highest attic temperature, reaching 40.7 °C. Design X, incorporating MAC ventilation, reduced the attic temperature to 36.4 °C, demonstrating the effectiveness of the MAC in preventing direct heat transfer. Design Y, which added solar-powered fans to the MAC system, further lowered the attic temperature to 30.9 °C, highlighting the role of forced convection in hot air removal. The most advanced system, Design Z, integrated MAC, solar-powered fans, and the sensor-controlled rainwater harvesting system, achieved the lowest attic temperature of approximately 29.9 °C. This represents a substantial 10.8 °C reduction compared to the conventional metal deck roof (Design W). The controlled watering mechanism of the rainwater harvesting system effectively managed rooftop temperature fluctuations, rapidly cooling the surface from 60 °C to 31.8 °C within 5 minutes. In summary, the integrated cool roofing technology system, particularly Design Z, demonstrates superior performance in reducing attic and rooftop temperatures. The combined active and passive approaches, utilizing renewable energy from solar power, contribute to a sustainable and energy-efficient building environment.
