Leviton Decora Smart Switch and Smart Dimmer (review)

This article provides a comprehensive review of the Leviton Decora Smart Switch and Smart Dimmer, hub-less Wi-Fi light switches compatible with HomeKit. The author initially purchased two switches and two dimmers due to confidence in the Leviton brand, known for its electrical products, and installed them on the same day. While a recent firmware update addressed some initial issues, the review covers various aspects of the devices, including design, installation, app functionality, and performance. The design of the Leviton Decora switches is described as standard decora style, fitting seamlessly with other decora switch plates. A notable feature is the detachable toggle button, allowing for color customization with included ivory or white options. However, this feature also presents a potential drawback, as the toggle can be accidentally removed during installation. A prominent design criticism is the engraved Leviton logo and 'Decora Smart' branding directly on the switch, which is permanent as no wall switch plate is included to cover it. The switches produce audible clicking noises, both when toggled manually and, more notably, when operated remotely via an app, which could be disruptive at night. An LED indicator light is present, with adjustable settings (always off, locator mode, status mode) configurable through the Leviton Decora Smart Home App. Installation of the switches can be challenging due to their relatively large size, potentially causing difficulties in crowded switch boxes. The switches lack pre-attached wires, which can be advantageous for replacing existing switches but necessitates providing a neutral wire for Wi-Fi connectivity. Two wiring methods are offered: the traditional wrap-around terminal screw and an insertion method under a metal plate. The latter, despite appearing simpler, was found to be prone to alignment issues. A concern raised by the author is that the installed switches become noticeably warm to the touch, a characteristic not observed in other smart switches used in their home, although Leviton states this is normal. Pairing the switches with HomeKit is straightforward, achievable through either the Leviton Decora Smart Home app or the native iOS Home app. The author successfully paired them using the Home app. It is important to note that remote functionality requires an Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad as a HomeKit hub, as Leviton does not offer its own cloud service for remote access. This hub-less design is highlighted as a privacy benefit, as it eliminates the need for user accounts or data collection by Leviton. The dedicated Leviton Decora Smart Home app offers limited additional functionality beyond the Apple Home app, primarily providing options to configure the LED indicator, check for firmware updates, and set the load type (Incandescent, CFL, or LED). Initially, the switches experienced Wi-Fi connectivity issues, leading to frequent 'No Response' messages and requiring manual resets. This problem was resolved with a firmware update released in late June 2018, which significantly improved reliability and performance. Post-update, the switches demonstrate impressive response times, reacting almost instantly to commands from the Home app, outperforming other smart switches owned by the author.
