leckie studio's mirrored 'arcana' cabins disappear into their forested context
Leckie Studio, an architectural practice, has collaborated with design agency Aruliden to conceptualize ‘Arcana,’ a retreat composed of mirrored cabins. These tiny cabins are designed to encourage solitude and immersion in nature, with their mirrored exteriors integrating them seamlessly into their forested surroundings. The project is envisioned as a movement to reconnect individuals with the wilderness. The first Arcana retreat is planned for the Canadian wilderness, approximately two hours outside of Toronto.
An important aspect of the design addresses environmental stewardship, particularly concerning local wildlife. The design team at Leckie Studio provided an update clarifying that the reflective cladding on the cabins is an imperfect mirrored surface, which helps to deter birds by not presenting a clear reflection. Furthermore, a specialized film will be applied to all reflective surfaces. This film is unnoticeable to the human eye but allows birds to identify the cabin as a solid object in the landscape, preventing collisions. This thoughtful approach underscores Arcana's commitment to respecting and preserving the natural habitat.
The Arcana cabins are a joint effort between Leckie Studio Architecture and Design, responsible for the architectural concept, and Aruliden, who developed the brand identity. The experience offered by the Arcana cabins is characterized by several distinct elements. These include invigorating art direction, clean and modern architectural lines, a neutral color palette, and soothing natural interior finishes. These interior choices are intended to complement the simplicity and ruggedness of the Canadian forest environment. The overall design aims to create a harmonious balance between contemporary aesthetics and natural surroundings, fostering a sense of calm and connection to nature.
Beyond the architecture itself, the Arcana experience incorporates unique elements designed to enhance the connection to nature. These include guided hiking trails featuring graphic signage designed by Aruliden, providing a curated exploration of the natural surroundings. Additionally, a 'sounds of Arcana' tracklist, presented on a specially designed vinyl record, further contributes to the immersive and meditative atmosphere. These complementary elements emphasize a holistic approach to the retreat, focusing on sensory engagement and a deeper appreciation of the wilderness. The project represents an innovative approach to eco-tourism, combining minimalist architecture with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility and guest well-being.
