Her personal experience of longing for comfort and familiarity, stemming from being away from her family since the age of 11 and being unable to see them for over 4.5 years due to the pandemic, fueled this aspiration. Initially, Zhang pursued civil engineering as an undergraduate, a popular field in China at the time. However, after two years, she realized it was not her true calling and took a gap year to explore modern arts, design, and other creative avenues. This period ignited an urge to pursue work that resonated emotionally and could impact others' feelings positively. Her first significant step into interior design came in 2015 when she had the opportunity to work on a 7000 sq ft office in Shanghai. The project's goal was to create a comfortable, communicative working environment that seamlessly integrated with its spacious outdoor terrace. Zhang's creative input, particularly her use of colors and materials in material boards and Photoshop renderings, was highly praised. She also collaborated on designing and installing a ceiling installation made of stone and wood, a challenging but rewarding experience that solidified her passion for design. In 2016, Zhang officially began her interior design education at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design).
