Kyuhyung Cho creates colourful three-sided shelves for Menu
Stockholm-based designer Kyuhyung Cho developed the Corners range of three-sided metal shelves as a practical and visually appealing solution for organizing small objects and reducing clutter. The design is inspired by the natural tendency to use corners for organization, offering a simple yet effective way to manage personal belongings. The shelves are produced by the Danish furniture brand Menu and are available in both square and rectangular configurations, each comprising a set of three components.
The manufacturing process involves cutting thin steel plates into L-shapes, which are then folded and welded to create the distinctive corner form. The design features a layered approach where the largest corner component serves as a base shelf. Medium and small elements are then placed on top, functioning as dividers that help compartmentalize the stored items. This modular design allows users to arrange their items efficiently within the defined spaces.
A key aesthetic feature of the Corners shelves is the use of different bright hues for each powder-coated plate. This deliberate choice enables users to create personalized color compositions, allowing them to visually categorize their possessions. The varied colors not only add a vibrant touch to any space but also help in differentiating and organizing various types of objects, making it easier to locate specific items.
The versatility of the Corners shelves allows for various placement options within a living or working environment. They can be conveniently placed on a desk to organize stationery or small accessories, fixed to a wall to create floating storage and display areas, or positioned directly into the corners of a room to maximize spatial efficiency. This adaptability makes the shelves suitable for a wide range of interior settings and user needs.
Kyuhyung Cho's design philosophy is influenced by his background in typography design, which is evident in his graphical approach to furniture. This background contributes to the clean lines and clear functionality observed in his creations. Prior to the Corners shelves, Cho's portfolio includes other innovative designs, such as wave-shaped clothes rails designed to maintain even spacing between garments and a collection of bathroom accessories characterized by their softly rounded edges. These previous works underscore his consistent focus on functional design combined with an aesthetic sensibility.
The Corners shelves are presented as an elegant and flexible storage solution that addresses common organizational challenges while incorporating a playful and colorful element. The design's simplicity, coupled with its functional versatility and vibrant aesthetics, makes it a notable addition to contemporary homeware, catering to individuals seeking practical yet stylish ways to keep their spaces tidy.
