Kitchen and Bath Specialty Certificate
The Kitchen and Bath Specialty Certificate program at Harper College is a 44-credit-hour certificate designed for individuals interested in the specialized fields of kitchen and bath design. This program serves as a foundational step for students, allowing them to benchmark their progress within the broader Interior Design curriculum. Upon successful completion, graduates are prepared for roles such as kitchen and bath designer or interior design assistant.
The curriculum is comprehensive, covering various aspects of interior design relevant to kitchens and bathrooms. Students will engage in courses focusing on interior design studio work, materials and sources, interior perspectives and rendering, interior detail/construction drawing, architectural lighting, and dedicated kitchen and bathroom design studio projects. These courses are led by experienced instructors who are recognized experts in the interior design industry.
A key component of the program is the hands-on experience provided in Harper College’s dedicated design rooms. These facilities are equipped with essential tools and resources, including drafting tables, display areas, a lighting lab, and practical kitchen cabinetry setups, ensuring students gain practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge. The credits earned through this certificate program are fully transferable and can be applied towards the Interior Design Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Degree offered by Harper College.
Specific course requirements within the program include ARC 116 (Architectural CAD I), ART 121 (Design I), IND 100 (Theory and Fundamentals of Design), IND 101 (Interior Design Studio I), IND 102 (Interior Design Studio II), IND 106 (Materials and Sources), IND 107 (Interior Perspective and Rendering), IND 110 (Problem Solving and Design Communication), IND 114 (Codes for Interior Designers), IND 116 (Interior Detail/Construction Drawing), IND 203 (3-D Design Studio), IND 206 (Architectural Lighting), IND 207 (Interior Design Internship), IND 230 (Kitchen Design Studio), IND 232 (Kitchen and Bath CAD Studio), and IND 233 (Bathroom Design Studio). Each course description outlines its learning objectives, lecture/lab hours, contact hours, and any prerequisites, ensuring a structured progression through the program. For example, IND 100 introduces design principles, color theory, human environment factors, and professional aspects of interior design, while IND 101 focuses on space planning, furniture selection, and presentation techniques, requiring a drafting kit purchase.
Advanced courses like IND 230 and IND 233 delve into the technical and accessibility considerations of designing kitchens and bathrooms, respectively, incorporating fundamental drafting conventions and adherence to guidelines such as those from the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association). IND 232 introduces specialized CAD software for 2D space planning, interior elevations, and 3D perspectives for kitchens and baths. The program also includes an Interior Design Internship (IND 207), offering selected students practical experience with design firms, retail stores, or showrooms, culminating in a report on their experience. This certificate not only provides specialized knowledge and skills but also offers a clear pathway to further academic and professional development in interior design.
