'It's pure escapism': this extraordinary house design was inspired by a stagnant pond

Dan and Nina Rowland, driven by a desire for more space and an improved quality of life after the birth of their first daughter, embarked on a mission to create a sustainable, biophilic home. Their journey began in 2015 while living in a London basement apartment, where they envisioned a deeper connection with nature. Dan, who studied psychology and later branched into architecture, is a strong advocate for biophilic design, believing in its positive impact on well-being through symbiosis with nature. The couple's initial search for a coastal site led them to a neglected plot featuring a dated 1930s house, an overgrown paddock, and a large, stagnant pond. Despite the unappealing state of the pond, Nina felt an instinctive pull towards the property. Dan, during their first viewing, recognized the site's hidden potential, envisioning a home that seamlessly integrated with its surroundings. The turning point came when Dan observed the light reflecting off the murky water, sparking the idea to design the house with its main living area at the rear. His vision was a bright, airy space with large sliding doors that would maximize the south-facing aspect and create the illusion of the property floating over a clear, natural swimming pond. In 2016, with Nina pregnant with their second child, Lexi, the couple sold their London property and moved into the existing house on the new plot, which they intended to demolish. The construction of their five-bedroom home, built from structural insulated panels (SIPs) and clad in Siberian larch, was a challenging but ultimately rewarding endeavor. Nina meticulously curated the interior, selecting natural and textural materials, furniture, and soft furnishings to complement the exterior's natural aesthetic. She aimed for a relaxed yet modern feel, contrasting these natural elements with sharper, more refined details. The finished home is characterized by abundant natural light and an atmosphere that is both serene and stimulating. The success of their project, which was featured on the UK television show *Grand Designs*, has led to a significant increase in requests for their architectural practice, Studio Fuse, from clients seeking to create their own biophilic homes. The Rowlands note that visitors often kick off their shoes and cross the stepping stones of the natural pond, immediately sensing the adventure, creativity, and sense of escapism the property offers. #BiophilicDesign #SustainableHome #NaturalSwimmingPond #EcoHome #ArchitecturalDesign #InteriorDesign #GrandDesigns #CoastalLiving #PropertyDevelopment #StudioFuse #BiophilicDesign #SustainableHome #NaturalSwimmingPond #EcoHome #ArchitecturalDesign #InteriorDesign #GrandDesigns #CoastalLiving #PropertyDevelopment #StudioFuse
